The need for an international standing army to prevent horrendous massacres is no more clearly demonstrated than in the case of Sudan's cursed Darfur zone, which is in free fall. The risk to civilians there is greater now than at any time since the conflict first erupted. The African Union peacekeepers' mandate expires at the end of this month, and Sudan has rejected entry of a UN peacekeeping force. Aid agencies - the lifeline for 2.5 million people - are threatening to pull out as a result of the direct targeting of humanitarians, leaving the already devastated civilian population further exposed and at risk. Sudan plans instead to send in a large number of its own troops. Given the government's record, it seems quite likely that - with international observers out of the way - Khartoum can get on with the business of completing the genocide that it already under way. read full story / add a comment

The Drimagh Anti Bin Tax Campaign has organised very effective protests at Davitt Road Depot over the last two Saturdays. Over 250 people have turned up at the depot, wheelie bins in tow and have disposed of waste bags in an effective and organised fashion at the depot in protest at the non collection of our bins for non payment of the double tax of Bin Tax. These protests have served two purposes. 1. Solidarity and public protest at non collection and 2.a practical way for people who cannot dispose of their waste into the bin trucks on the mornings of the collection because of work. read full story / add a comment

A well-known method of subjugation utilised by conquerors and rulers alike is, “divide and conquer”; this strategy applies equally in times of war and peace. It may surprise many but this method remains the principal means of social control in today’s western societies. The primary divisive structure today is the (separate, ‘closed-door’) nuclear family and the principal divided unit is the psychically isolated, competitive individual. [It should be noted that the ‘individual’, as distinct from the group, is a relatively recent social creation.] read full story / add a comment
