dublin / summit mobilisations / news report Friday April 30, 2004 18:22 by ec
Something of a confrontation between the Group Who went to Mountjoy to protest the detention of their three friends and Two camera crews took place. An IMCer was present and filled me in on what happened as follows. Footage and stills of the incident will follow.

At around 12.30 in the vicinity of Mountjoy a SKY news cameraman with a retinue of 3 gardai repeatedly attempted to film protesters who made it clear they did not want to be filmed. With Garda cover he insisted on pushing his way into the ranks of protesters agressively shoving the camera in their faces. It was made clear to him by the IMCer that he was behaving in an unprofessional and irresponsible and provocative manner. He refused to leave and his camera sustained some minor damage when it was kicked while sitting on the ground on the road. He has since been bleating on about being 'attacked' up at the indymedia centre at a press conference. We have film of his provocateur style behavior which will be published immin read full story / add a comment

well well well, the government has been forced to make an embarrassing u-turn on its electronic voting plans after an independent commission said it could not recommend the introduction of such a system.

the Electronic Voting Commission said the system was open to potential interference and its accuracy could not be guaranteed. Environment Minister Martin Cullen subsequently issued a statement saying that plans to introduce electronic voting in all constituencies for the local and European elections this June were being scrapped. He said voting in all constituencies would be carried out using the existing paper ballot method.

Around €40 million has so far been spent in buying the fucking machines. read full story / add a comment

Organisers have reacted by calling a protest against the ban for 6pm Saturday at the GPO on O’Connell st. This is the same time as the original march was due to start. read full story / add a comment

Dublin Grassroots Network has expressed concern that the government is attempting to incite a riot. This follows a pattern of harassment, misrepresentation and intimidation apparently designed to raise tensions in advance of May Day protests. DGN has raised particular concerns about the use of undercover policemen, who have a history of acting as agents provocateurs.

DGN has also released a dossier of "dirty tricks" from the security forces and unscrupulous journalists. read full story / add a comment
