The Annual Seamus Costello Commemoration will take place on Sunday the 2nd of October in little Bray Co Wicklow. Assemble at 1.30pm at the old town hall (Mc Donalds) for march to little Bray Cemetary. Republican Socialist Bands will be in attendence and prominent speakers. The Late Late Show 23 September 2005 Congratulations, at last someone has highlighted the disastrous state of the health service in Ireland. I am so delighted to hear that the Late Late Show has highlighted the plight most find themselves in when admitted to hospitals in Ireland. Hopefully at last something might be done to help the vulnerable elderly. Abuse of the Elderly in Irish hospitals is appalling and someone needs to investigate the hospitals in Ireland and how the elderly are treated immediately. In Ireland many of our senior citizens are at risk, vulnerable and invisible in the society especially when it comes to care in our hospitals, which our family have seen and encountered during the past 18 months in two of our Co Dublin hospitals. We were disgusted with the treatment of the elderly, which we witnessed. read full story / add a comment

At the conclusion of an appeal against the six-month prison sentence passed last November, the Danish High Court today gave former Danish intelligence officer Frank Grevil a reduced sentence of four months. Grevil was put on trial for disclosing classified threat assessments that raised questions about the basis for the Danish government´s decision to participate in the invasion of Iraq in March 2003. We really have a lot to learn from the German elections. only one party enjoyed a sizeable increase in its votes and representation, and no-one wants to involve it in government. Camphill Community, Ballytobin, near Callan in County Kilkenny, is a small rural community caring at present for 22 children and 12 adults, all with disabilities. It was established in 1979 as a therapeutic farm, to provide a home and school maily for children with exceptional needs, some with multiple disabilities and disturbances. This video was made during their recent Open Day and tries to give a feeling of what that day was like along with some history and a bit about the renewable energy and sustainable living projects that are going on out there. read full story / add a comment

Norwegian scientists say the suicide risk involved in taking SSRI antidepressants indicates that warnings for adults are necessary. The research bolsters demands to the Irish Medicines Board to extend to adults the suicide warnings to children (under-18s) included with these drugs, and to make them more prominent. read full story / add a comment

Depression Dialogues began in June 2004 with the first public meeting in Dublin. These meetings have continued monthly since, and take place on the first Thursday of each month in Jury's Hotel, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4, from 7.30 to 9.30pm. Each meeting is facilitated by Dr Michael Corry, co-author with Dr Aine Tubridy of Going Mad? Each person attending is asked to make a donation of €10 towards running costs. Australian authorities have warned that pregnant women taking the SSRI Seroxat (paroxetine) are at double the risk of having a birth defect in their unborn child. The Australian regulatory agency, the TGA, has reclassified paroxetine from a grade C to a grade D drug , one that should be avoided during pregnancy. The new warnings for Paxil and other SSRIs are spelled out as follows: "Details from a preliminary analysis of GlaxoSmithKline data showed a higher incidence of congenital malformations, particularly ventricular septal defects, in babies born to women taking the drug. Babies of women taking paroxetine in the first trimester of pregnancy were 2.2 times more likely to be born with a congenital malformation and 2.08 times more likely to have a cardiovascular malformation than those born to women taking other antidepressants, the data showed. read full story / add a comment

In the first Federal conspiracy trial against war resisters since the Vietnam War, the Judge has charged two of the Catholic Worker defendants with contempt. Peter Demott-Grady & Teresa Grady were charged yesterday with contempt as the Federal judge tried to strip their St. Patricks Day 2003 sit in at a military recruitment centre of context. Peter & Teresa are two of the St. Patricks Day 4 whose trial on 4 felony charges started this past Monday. Peter, Teresa & Clare Grady were cross examined by the Prosecutor as to their presence in Ireland during the PIt Stop Ploughshares trial in Dublin in March. read full story / add a comment |
