A 33 year old man was sentenced to seven days in jail for wearing the T-shirt with the words "Never mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols" at a court in Bray on Friday July, 16, 2006. The judge Murrough Connellan refused an attempt by the man to purge his "contempt" after his partner Lorraine Fitzpatrick purchased a plain blue T-shirt. The judge said he had not furnished "good reason" for wearing the garment. read full story / add a comment

national / environment / press release Monday July 17, 2006 11:29 by Friends of the Earth 1 comment (last - monday july 17, 2006 21:20)
Friends of the Earth has described the government's climate pollution plan, published on Friday, as " the ultimate stealth tax". It will cost the public at least €2 million a week according to the environmental justice group. The EPA plan estimates the rise in Ireland's greenhouse gas emissions will be twice what is allowed under the Kyoto Protocol from 2008 to 2012 or, put another way, an average of 7 million tonnes of excess pollution a year[1]. Every tonne of this overshoot will have to be offset by an emissions permit. The government is assuming permit prices will remain steady at around €15 a tonne giving a total cost to Ireland of €105 million a year or €2 million a week for five years[2]. Commenting on how government inaction will cost the consumer and the taxpayer, Friends of the Earth Director, Oisin Coghlan said: "This is the ultimate stealth tax. The government has replaced the polluter-pays principle with the public-pays principle. On the one hand industry will get their pollution permits for free but raise consumer prices to reflect their value [3]. On the other hand the government will use taxpayers' money to buy permits for the rest of our Kyoto overshoot. It's a double whammy for the average household." read full story / add a comment

Today's Sunday Independent carries two advertisements seeking to recruit Irish people to work as Sales Representatives for a company, apparently called 'Exchange', whose sole function is to sell cars, motorbikes and utility vehicles to US military personnel serving abroad. These particular adverts are looking for people to service the US war machine in Iraq, Kuwait and the Middle East in general. Those employed will be based on US military facilities in Iraq and Kuwait. Prospective applicants are directed to a website, which carries the company motto: 'The only overseas car-buying program created by the [US] military, for the military'. It is a disgrace that an Irish newspaper is carrying advertisements recruiting civilians to service the US war machine in Iraq. Those who consider applying should bear in mind that they will be viewed in Iraq as servants of the US military and their lives will be at grave risk. Holding Irish citizenship will make no difference. read full story / add a comment

Gone are the days of a fair fight and a ‘just’ war – whatever that insane expression is supposed to mean – today we have the actions of the ‘might is right’ ideology of barbarism. This ‘new’ primitivism is evident in the actions of Zionist Israel and the Zionist influenced USA. Today’s wars are the most inglorious wars in human history. How proud we should be of our achievements when we allow idiotic differences and greed to escalate into bloodshed. What a ‘noble’ race of ‘civilised’ humans we are! View this planet as a visitor and be thoroughly appalled. read full story / add a comment

This article provides some background to the terrible events at Daechuri, and the neighbouring village of Doduri, where the South Korean state is using powers equivalent to the Irish Compulsory Purchase Order to clear the local farmers off their ancestral lands for a proposed expansion of the existing Camp Humphreys military facility, previously a Japanese military base. The farmers have been moved off their lands with extreme brutality, and the village is now surrounded by thousands of troops and police, villagers have been served with eviction notices and the area is enclosed by barbed wire. Protest by letter and e-mail to the South Korean Embassy: 15 Clyde Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4, Ireland. City: Dublin Phone: + (353 -1) - 660 - 8800/8053, 668 - 2109 Fax: (+353-1) - 660 - 8716. Balseskin Reception Centre is a 380 bed accomodation centre for asylum seekers and their families in Finglas, north Dublin. It was purpose built some 5 years ago and has a well functioning medical unit, providing specialist health screening and medical care to the residents of the centre. However the centre is to be closed on ministerial orders, at short notice (next Friday) and without any consultation with staff in the HSE and the RIA (Reception and Integration Agency, Dept. of Justice). The 260 residents of the centre now have to be housed elsewhere. This will inevitably cause a disruption in medical care and infectious disease surveillance as no other specialist service for asylum seekers is available in Dublin city. read full story / add a comment
