Iris Robinson of the DUP has, today, claimed that people of a homosexual orientation should seek help from psychiatrists in order to be "turned around" referring to their sexuality. It is unbelievable that a member of an assembly responsible for the lives of others can come out and make these sorts of ignorant comments putting people's lives and well being in jeopardy. Shocked by the homophobic and ignorant comments, the Starry Plough Initiative wishes to make a statement... read full story / add a comment

Opponents of the Lisbon Treaty claim that Ireland will become part of a Pan-European Army.
However their hysteria betrays a profound ignorance of our military weaknesses and indeed the military weakness of the European armies even the big three, German, France and the United Kingdom.
None of the European armies shows any likelihood of being able to overcome nationalistic rivalries, duplication of resources, linguistic difficulties and a plethora of different weapons systems that would make a Pan-European army exist anywhere except in the fantasies of Brussels bureacrats even if a common defence treaty is made official. read full story / add a comment

Five years ago, an EU Court of Auditors official informed his Secretary General of his suspicions of fraud and blackmail being practiced at the institution. After meeting with a refusal to examine the case, one yeare ago, he urged the Court´s President to react to the Secretary General´s failure to act. The only reaction he received was a disciplinary procedure being launched against him. read full story / add a comment

On April 29th, when the Strategic Review Body on Parading formally launched its consultative report, two residents’ groups - the Lower Ormeau Concerned Community in Belfast and the Garvaghy Road Residents Coalition in Portadown – whose communities were at the very heart of the turmoil and conflict over contentious marches in the 1990’s jointly set out their views and concerns in a full page article in “The Irish News”, the main nationalist daily paper in the North.

Since then, the two residents' groups have been spuriously accused by some within Sinn Fein of working to "an agenda" - although no-one who makes that accusation is prepared to state what that agenda is.

Given that parades are officially listed as one of the items to be “resolved” at the Downing Street talks between Peter Robinson, Martin McGuinness and Gordon Brown, its worth recalling the position of the two residents’ groups and establishing if others, and not the residents, are working to "an agenda".. read full story / add a comment

Following on from the affiliation by the PCS, the ASLEF union has now voted to affiliate to Hands Off the People of Iran. Nobody spoke against the motion to affiliate. Full article at link.

The national conference of Aslef, the rail drivers’ union, has voted unanimously to affiliate to the Hands Off the People of Iran campaign. This is the second major union to do so, following the decision of last month’s PCS conference, where only Socialist Workers Party comrades opposed affiliation. However, the SWP had no presence at the Aslef conference and nobody spoke against the proposal. Delegates from across the country spoke in favour, including general secretary Keith Norman. read full story / add a comment

Like their counterparts in France, Ruairi Quinn and the Irish Labour Party have become disturbingly fixated on dark skinned schoolgirls wearing hijabs. Derangement, paranoia and liberal racism are now centrist political positions. Quinn's Islamophobic and racist tirade against those immigrants who don't "conform to Irish norms" (we could have fun trying to define that one) is covered in today's Irish Independent:
