Far-right BNP lands surprise council seat - The far-right British National Party has taken a council seat in northwest England in a surprise by-election victory. The BNP, which already holds three council seats in the area, won the Mill Hill seat in Blackburn on Thursday night with a majority of just 16 votes. After a recount, BNP candidate Robin Evans won the seat with 578 votes to Labour's 562, against 505 for the Liberal Democrats and 154 for the Conservatives. Turnout was 39 percent. The result sparked fears among mainstream parties that the BNP could make further advances in the northwest, scene of inter-racial rioting last summer. read full story / add a comment

To make the protest at Shannon on December 8th as effective as possible we need direct action. The action on the last occasion provided a good example of the possibilities. With larger numbers committed to this sort of action we will be able to threaten the US use of Shannon. It would be useful if all the groups running buses to Shannon posted details on indymedia I understand that there is a bus from Cork leaving from outside the Opera House at 10.00am People should begin discussing now how far they are prepared to go things like breaking the law, tearing down fences, getting arrested, blocking roads etc. Form affinity groups so that if you are lifted someone knows and can help you out. Each contingent should get a few to volunteer as photographers or video persons. See you all at Shannon and probably Dublin read full story / add a comment

its been a whole 6 months since the ucd branch of swss left the swp.at that time ,and many many times since,we have posed questions of the role of the swp in irelands anti-capitalist left.these questions are out of general concern for the state of irish socialism, and its possible future directions no answers have been provided.many usual swp tactics and personal bickering by misnamed/unnamed party full timers have been widespread however. today,we call for an open debate on the swps role in irish and international socialism , at the "marxism" conference this weekend.we will gladly provide speakers , and arguments. will the swp?? as former "branch secretary" of ucd swss , i had left the swp (for reasons outlined below) well before the following statement: read full story / add a comment
