An Online petition has been set up as part of a campaign against the Criminal Justice Bill. If introduced it will allow for the gardai to issue on the spot fines for whatever reason they deem fit and the only evidence that he or she needs in support is his or her subjective opinion that that person is in breach of the law. The person will have to pay up within a certain time period regardless of whether they are guilty or not. read full story / add a comment

The EU's REACH proposal for improved regulation of chemicals has sparked the largest ever industry lobbying campaign in Europe. The chemical industry council CEFIC took the lead, with German giant BASF in a key role, and with active backing from US chemical corporations and the Bush administration. Scare mongering, flawed impact studies and delay tactics are part of this aggressive counter-campaign that has seriously weakened REACH. More than ever, it is time for citizens to stand up against industry attempts to undermine progressive environment and health legislation.

This statement was sent by the Global Women’s Strike in Ireland to a demonstration and occupation at Rimini airport, Italy on Saturday, March 12th 2005 against the use of the airport for the refuelling of planes carrying US troops. There have been months of protests and the day before this occupation, it was announced that World Airways, the airline carrying the troops, was not going ahead with the plan to land in Rimini. An article in Il Manifesto on that day (‘Troppo Tensioni’, I Marines Non Atterrano by Cinzia Gubbini) says that when World Airways first contacted Aeradria on the 17 January, they let them know that they wanted to pull out of Shannon, Ireland and change the stopover to Rimini. read full story / add a comment

At the European Social Forum in Florence in November 2002 a debate emerged within the alter-globalisation movement over whether building opposition to Bush’s global war was a diversion from opposing corporate globalisation. The debate - in terms of developing a strategy for the movement - is centred on identifying the key issue or challenge that the movement should focus on. This is an essential task if the movements are to win and not just oppose or resist. read full story / add a comment
