Taking the movement forward in continued mass direct action confrontation with the capitalist offensive. Defending it against the pressures of its right wing to make it subservient to the union leadership and the Democratic Party. Helping it stand against the pressures of ultra leftism which would cut it off from the support and involvement of the hundreds of thousands and millions it needs to win. read full story / add a comment

David Morbeg writes on the growth in Workers Struggle in Iran. How Independent Unions are once again being formed after decades of suppression first under the Shah then under the Theocracy. Full text at url below. Iranian advocates of democracy have taken to the streets regularly since the fraudulent re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, promoting a “green revolution” against the heavy-handed, repressive theocracy that rules the country. But there’s another wave of protests that, if linked to the green movement, could greatly strengthen the opposition and give it a more pronounced social-democratic character. Late last week, for example, workers from the Shiraz Iran Telecommunications Industries blocked highways and sat in the provincial governor’s mansion for three days to protest 13 months of unpaid wages. A few weeks earlier, workers at the Mobarake steel complex in Isfahan staged hunger strikes on two days over pay and pension cuts. read full story / add a comment

Basque parents seek support from the authorities for their sons and daughters abused and tortured by Spanish police. The mothers and fathers of the 34 young people snatched during the massive Spanish police operation against Basque youth last November have transformed their agony into into energetic campaigning. Although they have no connection to one anohter other than their shared anguish, they have joined their voices, going from door to door of the authorities to tell the story of their hardship. Included in the allegations of Spanish police torture of the 34 youth are those of special sexual humiliation and threats against the 14 young women among them. They ask for only one thing: the protection of the authorities so that no more families have to endure what they did. read full story / add a comment

galway / anti-war / imperialism / event notice Tuesday March 02, 2010 18:39 by Galway Alliance Against War
The Galway Alliance Against War will mark International Women’s Day on Friday evening with a fundraiser for women organisations in Afghanistan, whose members risk life and limb on a daily basis to offer young girls an education. It has to be done in secret, as the ruling warlords, like the Taliban, oppose schools for girls. So, GAAW will hold a fundraiser for these women groups in Woodquay’s Rowing Club on Friday 5th March starting at 9pm. Admission to this ceili/disco is only €5. read full story / add a comment |
