Israeli Marxist politician who rejected Zionism and championed Palestinian rights, Meir Vilner has died aged 84. Meir was the youngest and last surviving of the 37 signatories to Israel's 1948, declaration of independence. As the Jewish leader of the Communist party of Israel, Meir eventually rejected zionism, publicised his country's nuclear weapons programme, and was the ONLY member of the Israeli knesset to protest at the official wining and dinning of the then governor of the West German Central bank, a convicted ex-nazi. read full story / add a comment

The media appears to have ignored the successful circuit court appeal against Chris Lavelle, the Mayo publican who admitted to a district court judge that he had called on other publicans to ban Travellers, even if there was no basis to refuse them service. Even though the judge accused Mr. Lavelle of acting illegally, and of inciting others to do the same, she still renewed his licence. Is there any hope that the mainstream media will rise above the standards of unfairness against Travellers set by the likes of Brendan O’Connor, Mary Ellen Synon and Kevin Myers? read full story / add a comment

If the presence of the life process is considered to be one of the exclusive characteristics of living creatures, what then are we to say about seeds? Does it ever occur to you that in those monocellulars “that have survived till today” the life process has virtually never come to a stop since the very beginning of their existence? Because of the obscurity of the line separating the living from the dead, is it not possible for us to claim that there is “life” in atoms? read full story / add a comment

The Liberties Recycling Plant in Basin Street, Dublin 8, is a model of community driven enterprise. As an example of sustainable business, it excels on many counts. It is a financially viable concern, recycles discarded clothes and textiles, and provides 15 employment positions for people who are trying to rehabilitate themselves from drug use. Yet the Irish Republic’s only textile recycling plant now faces closure - unless the authorities step in and help secure alternative premises. read full story / add a comment
