Local 100 of New York City's Transport Workers Union has invited Bernadette Devlin-McAliskey to address the union's annual James Connolly and Michael Quill Commemoration on March 14. McAliskey said she was quite happy to accept but didn't know if she could make it as her situation with regard to entry to the U.S. was unclear. Highshool students from over 30 highschools throughout NYC walked out today and thousands of them converged on Union Sq. where a rally was held. The walk-out was organised by NYC Youth Bloc which began as a protest against the W.E.F., but is now concentrating on the impending war. Highschool students adressed the rally as well as more seasoned activists. Speakers criticized cutbacks in education and social spending while there was unlimited funds to wage pemanent war. On February 14, a Florida Appeals court ruled there is absolutely nothing illegal about lying, concealing or distorting information by a major press organization. The court reversed the $425,000 jury verdict in favor of journalist Jane Akre who charged she was pressured by Fox Television management and lawyers to air what she knew and documented to be false information. The ruling basically declares it is technically not against any law, rule, or regulation to deliberately lie or distort the news on a television broadcast. read full story / add a comment

The Trinity College Branch of the Free Legal Advice Centres (FLAC) has organized a conference for March 8th around the title, “Poverty, Social Exclusion and the Law”. Speakers at the conference will deal with issues ranging from the interrelation of poverty with crime and educational disadvantage to the plight of travellers and refugees and the ideological content and function of law in modern bourgeois democracy. This conference will be of particular interest to those within Irish society concerned with tackling the cancer of social exclusion, so every organization and party should make an effort to be in attendance. the Brazilian federal state of Rio is presently in a state of "military curfew" this it is hoped will help authorities end the extreme problems from children to adults due to hard drug use, sale and distribution. The Pro-Choice protest outside the Dáil, scheduled for next Thursday March 6 (anniversary of our referendum victory last year) has to be POSTPONED because of difficulties about publicity and the need to assemble props.
