Foreignpolicy.ie has learnt that only a limited amount of EU legal instruments will be translated into Irish despite the fanfare of Irish becoming an “official” EU language.

A spokesperson for the Council has confirmed to us that regulation number 920/2005 only covers regulations adopted by co-decision. This means that laws adopted outside of co-decision will not be translated and importantly directives (one of the main sources of EU law), resolutions and decisions will not be translated.. read full story / add a comment

A former Iraqi army officer, who once posed as a body-double for Saddam Hussein's elder son, fears deportation to his homeland after being refused citizenship in Ireland.

Latif Yahia, 42, who claims to have survived three attempts on his life by Iraqi agents, has been married to an Irish woman - Karen, 36 - for seven years. The couple have a five-year-old daughter, Dina.

His 67-year-old mother, Yahia, and his brother's two children, Latif, nine, and Chimin, 13, who live with them in Daingean, County Offaly, are still awaiting the results of their application for asylum in Ireland. read full story / add a comment

The report on CIA illegal rendition and detention of prisoners in Europe was passed at plenary stage after one years work. The GUE/NGL is seeking strong action to be taken against states for their collaboration with, and failure to prevent, human rights abuses.
