Marx said that religion was the opium of the people but sport has eclipsed man's fascination with the supernatural. Football is the heroin of sport. I can remember the first time I stood with my father on a terrace and watched men chase a bag of wind around a field. I still can be found standing on those steps in all sorts of weather. read full story / add a comment

We normally start the monthly critical masses as soon as the evenings start to get long enough so that it's still bright after 7pm. We're a bit late getting started this year but better late than never. Bring your bike or other non-motorised transport (whistles, balloons and bike-bells are optional but welcome) and gather at the Garden of Remembrance, Parnell Square at 6pm on Friday (27th Mary) for a pleasant and fun bike ride around town. read full story / add a comment

Hundreds or maybe even thousands of people from Ireland will be travelling to Gleneagles, Scotland in early July to join others from all over the planet in protesting against the G8 Summit there. Dissent is one group organising to help people get there and we wanted to tell you why we are going. Once the protests are on you will hear about it on Sky News but as Mayday showed last year in Dublin you can't believe much of what the media tell you. read full story / add a comment

In a dangerous attack on civil liberties, Tayside Police have decided to prevent the Wednesday 6th July march against the G8 demonstrating in front of the Gleneagles Hotel.
In the same way that the G8 mafia want to control the world, Tayside Police believe they can control our streets and stop us having the free access that generations of Scots have fought for.
"This is the 21st Century and we are in a democracy, we should be able to take to our own roads in Scotland and march past the hotel and have our voices heard."
Campaigner Rose Gentle, whose soldier son Gordon died in Iraq last year, added: "We are not animals or terrorists - we just want our voices to be heard." read full story / add a comment
