That ICTU has singularly failed public sector workers is absolutely indisputable – the events of the last few weeks have only served to show in the most gruesome manner the appalling state of the current “leadership”. Every time our Union negotiators open their mouths they further discredit the public service, conceding ground, kicking to touch on industrial action and giving the government yet more ammunition to attack us with. read full story / add a comment

Last month in it's 22ND report, the Independent Monitoring Commission (IMC) alleged that Concerned Families Against Drugs (CFAD) were, 'a vigilante group who was responsible for a number of punishment shootings and pipe-bombings of suspected Drug Dealers' in the North Belfast area.
Although, we were surprised and dismayed at these unfounded allegations, given that the IMC had not contacted CFAD before issuing its report. CFAD complained to the IMC through our legal representative and were subsequently invited to meet with the IMC today (8/12/09).

Chris Strafford reports on the 2009 HOPI Britain AGM. There is also a link to MIke McNairs keynote address to the conference. Vids will hopefully be available at a later stage.

Hopi has always called for the building of strong links between the democratic and revolutionary movements in Iran, whilst others in the movement - the British Socialist Workers Party, George Galloway - previously attacked us for ‘trying to dictate to the movement in Iran’. Some had even accused us of playing into the hands of imperialism for daring to criticise the theocratic regime. The SWP leadership realised the way the wind was blowing and made a U-turn, coming out in favour of the millions of protestors who marched through the streets of Tehran and other cities (although SWP comrades on the leadership of the Stop the War Coalition continue to oppose Hopi’s affiliation). Galloway, however, has simply made himself look idiotic by defending not only the rigged elections and the subsequent repression, but also the Islamic republic itself. read full story / add a comment

Emergency Meeting of NPSA, this Monday at 7.30 in Teachers Club.

Public Services Committee of ICTU recommended a series of strikes against cuts in pay and pension and compulsory redundancies. One strike against pay cuts took place and another was called for last Thursday. PSC leaders entered talks with government. They deferred the strike without a written agreement that permanent pay cuts were off the table. They then entered sectoral talks. They finalised agreements on huge changes in each sector in written documents. The government then pulled the plug on the temporary nature of the pay cuts. read full story / add a comment
