‘The Wildlife Photographer of the Year’ is an annual award and exhibition organised by the Natural History Museum in London, and the BBC Wildlife Magazine. The exhibition goes on an extensive tour of the U.K., as well as touring Spain, Portugal, Poland, Australia, the U.S., the Netherlands, and Abu Dhabi. Shell have a two year sponsorship deal with the Natural History Museum, which means that ’The Wildlife Photographer of the Year’ is the ’Shell Wildlife Photographer of the Year’ until at least late 2008. There has been some campaigning in London to put pressure on the Natural History Museum not to take sponsorship from Shell. read full story / add a comment

Consider joining the Catholic Workers as they vigil and leaflet outside the Aviation Authority. The Aviation Authority authorises the refueling of CIA torture flights and the 3,000 (presently) U.S. troops passing through Shannon Airport weekly to an illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq. If you are opposed to the war, consider making your opposition visible one hour a week in your community, on your campus or outside a site of significance. read full story / add a comment

While the government is busily celebrating the greed festival that are SSIAs, (the scheme by which the already well off are made even more well off by the much less well off) they are showing a much less generous attitude to the hapless folk who have gone online to order a few cheap CDs and DVDs from other countries – almost certainly Christmas presents in most cases. read full story / add a comment

The Captive Animals' Protection Society and Alliance for Animal Rights have renewed their criticism of the Arts Council for again funding animal circuses, shortly after a major report detailing the poor conditions animals are subjected to in Irish circuses. The Arts Council today announced they had given 230,000 Euros to circuses for 2007, 100,000 Euros more than in 2006. The circuses funded include Duffy’s and Fossett’s, both of which use animals. Both CAPS and AFAR have called into question the Arts Council claim that circuses have to provide a copy of their ‘animal welfare policy’ when applying for funding. The Arts Council have refused to give CAPS copies of the policies and AFAR believe they do not exist. read full story / add a comment

Following on from a protest in Newry a fortnight ago, a large protest was held in Derry City on Saturday, 16th December. The month of December traditionally represents the prisoners' month, and this protest - organised by the Republican Prisoners' Action Group (RPAG) - was in support of the demands of the Republican POWs currently on protest in Maghaberry Gaol. Approximately 100 protestors turned out for the event on Shipquay Street, as did no less than twenty armed members of the British Colonial Police. read full story / add a comment

In June 2006 the Director of Public Prosecutions revised his general guidelines. One section of the revised guidelines caused bemusement amongst some in the legal profession. Section 9 in particular which refers to the guidelines on disclosure is the one which has created a point of debate and criticism. Ironically the DPP singled out the McKevitt case as a shining example of fair procedures on disclosure when in fact the opposite happened in the McKevitt trial. Both nationally and internationally legal observers have described the disclosure process used during the McKevitt case as one of the most blatant abuses on disclosure that they have ever witnessed. read full story / add a comment

Given as Shell’s site in Ballinaboy contains 400 acres, ten times more than the size of the refinery they are building at the moment, Shell to Sea activists have long suspected it is to be the first of many. A report published by the Petroleum Affairs Division of the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, earlier this year envisages the construction of more refineries and more pipelines in Erris, in addition to the Corrib gas development, involving companies other than just Shell, and with state encouragement. A backgrounder on oil and gas in the west of Ireland can be read here: https://publish.indymedia.org.uk/en/2006/10/352997.html read full story / add a comment
