Pat & Sharon Mullen of Ballymote, Co. Sligo are in a dispute with the Electricity Supply Board, the E.S.B. want to put three 123 foot high electricity pylons on their land carrying 220,000 volt cables. Pat & Sharon are refusing E.S.B. staff entry to their land to install five overhead lines. On the grounds that they have the potential to have adverse effects on their health, their children and communities health and that of their livestock. Furthermore, they are concerned about the almost certain devaluation of four sites on their picturesque land by the erection of these massive 123 foothigh pylons and the subsequent impact on their children’s inheritance. They want the E.S.B. to place the power lines under ground. A simple request! read full story / add a comment

Awal Gul has finally left Guantánamo - in a coffin. Full text at link. On Thursday the Pentagon announced that Awal Gul, a 48-year old Afghan prisoner, who had been held for nine years without charge or trial and was scheduled to be held forever, died in a shower after suffering a heart attack. Gul had never been held as a prisoner of war, and despite the US government’s assertions that he could be held forever, no one in a position of authority — neither President Bush nor President Obama — had ever adequately demonstrated that he constituted a threat to the United States. read full story / add a comment

Global Harmonies, in conjunction with Mary Jennings, is presenting two exciting Georgian singing workshops this March. Georgia, in the Caucasus, has a singing culture which Unesco describes as one of the Oral and Intangible Masterpieces of Humanity. As well as a chance to immerse yourself in some amazing and ethereal harmonies, both of these workshops offer an insight into the fascinating idea of music as medicine and in the healing powers of the human voice. The workshops take place from 6.30-9pm on Thursday 10th March and Monday 14th March at the Carmelite Community Centre, Aungier St, Dublin 2. One workshop costs €35 or you can do both for the price of €55. Concessions are available. read full story / add a comment

Chris Knight of the Radical Anthropology Group continues his examination of Chomsky's life and work. In particular he analyses an early work by Chomsky: Cartesian linguistics. He also looks at some sources Chomsky tapped for funding in his early days. Full text at link. In 1966, Noam Chomsky (pictured) published his Cartesian linguistics. The book was a survey of rationalist conceptions of language and mind, focusing heavily on the French mathematician and philosopher, Réné Descartes (1596-1650). In his early years, Chomsky had been working within the structuralist tradition of Ferdinand de Saussure, Roman Jakobson, Leonard Bloomfield and his own teacher, Zellig Harris. Chomsky wrote Cartesian linguistics in order to signal to the world his change of mind. His distinctively 'Cartesian' approach, he now clarified, was a rebellion against the entire 20th century tradition of structural linguistics. ... read full story / add a comment

When I was young I remember my father and mother discussing someone in fairly heated terms. The epithet used to some up the discussion was that this person (I do not remember who it was) was a "dog in the manger." I was all ears and later I got my mother to explain to me what a "dog in the manger" meant. "The dog cannot eat the hay," my mother elaborated, "But he won't let the horse eat it." read full story / add a comment |
