"Support European Day of Action against Austerity - 29 September should be day of active struggle, protests and strikes across Europe"

Statement of Left MEPs

We warmly welcome the initiative by the European Trade Union Confederation to launch 29 September as a European Day of Action around the slogan: “No to austerity – Priority for jobs and growth!”. As representatives of Left parties across Europe, we commit to enthusiastically build for and participate in the actions and demonstrations across Europe on that date.

More sickening crimes exposed on the part of US forces in Afghanistan. Full story at link.

Twelve US soldiers have been charged with crimes in Afghanistan ranging from murdering civilians to keeping body parts as war trophies.

The soldiers from the 5th Stryker Brigade, based in Washington State, were deployed to Kandahar province a year ago, and the murders occurred between January and March, according to charges by army prosecutors made public this week.

"Allegations like this are . . . very serious," Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell told a news briefing."Clearly, even if these allegations are proved to be untrue, it is unhelpful. It does not help the perceptions of our forces around the world." (Morrell is a master of understatement) read full story / add a comment

international / worker & community struggles and protests / event notice Wednesday September 08, 2010 13:40 by Spartacus
As you may already be aware, the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), the European wide umbrella to which ICTU is affiliated, has named Wednesday 29 September as the date for European wide action under the title 'No to Austerity - Priority for Jobs and Growth'. See http://www.etuc.org/a/7407 for details on their website.

You will see from the link that a major protest is planned for Brussels that day and in terms of local actions a general strike will be taking place in Spain. It is likely that most other national trade union confederations who were party to the ETUC decision in naming this date will observe it with actions in their own country. For all the reasons that the CPSU officially endorsed the recent June Europe wide week of action against the cuts and bailouts initiated by Joe Higgins and other left MEPs, we feel international initiatives like this are a vital part of the fightback we need. read full story / add a comment

Fidel criticises anti-Semitism on the part of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad but also made clear his understanding of Irans fear of attack from Israel and the US. This is from an interview with Jeffrey Goldberg, a journalist who writes for The Atlantic magazine. Full text at link.

Fidel Castro has criticised Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for what he called his anti-Semitic attitudes. The former Cuban leader also warned that an escalating conflict between Iran and the West could lead to nuclear war. Over the course of a five-hour discussion, Mr Castro "repeatedly returned to his excoriation of anti-Semitism", and criticised Mr Ahmadinejad for denying the Holocaust.

Mr Castro told Mr Goldberg that he understood Iranian fears of Israeli-American aggression and that he did not believe that sanctions and threat would dissuade Iran from pursuing nuclear weapons. read full story / add a comment

One Law for All Protest the Pope
7 September 2010

One Law for All is adding its support to Protest the Pope. Spokesperson, Maryam Namazie, will be speaking at the 18 September march and rally beginning at Hyde Park Corner at 1.30pm (www.protest-the-pope.org.uk).

One Law for All’s opposition to Sharia courts and religion’s adverse role in public life necessitates a criticism of the Pope and Vatican. Whilst the Pope is free to travel to meet his supporters, he cannot be free from criticism, particularly given that his visit is a state one and because of his and the Vatican’s regressive policies. Amongst other things, the Pope and Vatican are opposed to equal rights for women and homosexuals as well as condom distribution to AIDS-ravaged societies in Africa. They have refused to address many thousands of cases of child sex abuse and torture, deliberately perverting the course of justice in these cases, and moving predatory priests from location to location giving them the opportunity to re-offend. read full story / add a comment
