The Galway Alliance Against War is organising a “99 Red Balloon Peace Event” at Galway’s Spanish Arch at noon on Sunday 24th June, the same day as the Salthill Air Show. Last year the Galway peace group ran a similar event, which ended in controversy when the Gardaí burst most of the red balloons. At the time the authorities claimed that the warplanes would be endangered if the balloons “collided” with them. Such claims were greeted with incredulity and the Gardaí were left with what resembled egg on their faces. read full story / add a comment

The University of Dublin constituency has 11 candidates and promises to be compeditive. The electorate consists of those with University of Dublin degrees (Trinity College mainly, but also a few DIT & Froebel College). The constituency shows how elitist the Seanad University seats are. Not only do graduates get more representation, but within graduates there is distinction between NUI and TCD and all others. Ballot papers are to be returned by 11am, 24 July 2007. read full story / add a comment

"gloriajw' has written a very good article which breaks down many of the causes of alienation of women in technical groups and online communities. It was forwarded to the IMC Global women's list with the following comment:

"Generally a subject covered much too little in indymedia communities, on
our websites and in communication we are having with each other.

With the email from Melbourne today that another collective had decided
to shut down, also because they couldn't handle spam on the site, this
seems even more interesting. The article is about gender, and at the
same time about communication, and the anonymity of open publishing."

is youth the key to the spiralling increase in anti-social behaviour or has the youth of today just taken example from their peers and enhanced the problem to a modern 21st century process in destabilising society. Does the problem go back further than what we are prepared to accept and have we now come to a stage where we need to re-evaluate the way we cherish freedom and human rights.
We see AIDS as being a threat to human existence. We now see ASB as a threat to the stability of our society and subsequently human existence in itself. read full story / add a comment
