On New Year's Day 1991, I was arrested with Moana Cole, Sue Frankel and Bill Streit, "the ANZUS Plowshares" on Griffiss Air Force Base, upstate New York. We had closed the runway and disabled a scramble alert B52 Bomber putting it out of action for the length of the Gulf War.

On January 15th., the war commenced at 7 pm with B52 Bombers dleivering air launched cruise missiles at high priority targets. The attack was timed for prime time televion. Bill and I were in a county jail in Catskill, Moana and Sue were in a county jail in Syracuse.

The Irish Republican Prisoners Support Group are having a Bloody Sunday anniversary meeting on January 31 to support political status for Irish Republican prisoners and it has come under threat from the far right.

Because we refuse to be intimidated by these threats, we have decided to appeal to the labour movement and to Unite Against Fascism for protection on the night. "Crossfire" killings are a euphemism for an execution. Acting as judge, jury and executioner, a government-appointed Star Chamber decides who should die for their so-called crimes against the interests of the ruling clique and then the order goes out to the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
The WikiLeaks cables show that the British government facilitates this execution squad—providing it with training, the exact nature of which, in light of the ongoing brutal behaviour of British forces and inhumane conduct in Iraq and Afghanistan, remains somewhat cloudy.

NUIG academic staff are the first to be hit by a coordinated attack across the universities on staff conditions, notably academic freedom, tenure, flexible work and holiday entitlements. This attack is being spearheaded during the exam season when most staff are too busy to respond - and in the last days of the FF / GP government, no doubt on the calculation that they may not have political cover for this kind of attack post-election. read full story / add a comment
