The Health and Safety Authority (http://www.hsa.ie) published new draft guidelines on the prevention and resolution of workplace bullying. Interested parties are invited to submit comments and observations to the Public Consultation Phase on the draft by the 16th of January 2007 before the guidelines become a Code of Practice with legal force. The new Code does not compel the assessment of bullying within Safety Statements, the production of monitoring information about workplace bullying episodes, transparent procedures or objective investigation of bullying complaints. No State authority is nominated with responsibility to enforce effective measures to reduce workplace bullying behaviour. As such it is a cosmetic measure that can be misused as a charter to bully. read full story / add a comment

As America faces the most calamitous military misadventure in its history, the administration offers unqualified slogans rather than detailed plans to remedy the horror it created in Iraq. The American mass media is now buzzing with the sound of nothing meaningful. The Bush administration has resorted to contextually meaningless slogans in its efforts to dupe an increasingly sceptical public. The latest inane slogans saturating the airwaves are “win” and “way forward”. Only adolescents and the daft invest meaning in unqualified slogans – shall we test the latest two slogans and attempt to determine the ruse behind the deception? read full story / add a comment

A broad-based network of U.S.-based activists, grassroots organizations, and their allies are betting that this is a time when a U.S. Social Forum could be a vehicle for moving a social, environmental and economic justice agenda to center stage. The U.S. Social Forum planning effort grew out of a series of consultations held in 2003 between activists in the United States and members of the World Social Forum International Council. Grassroots Global Justice (GGJ), a national alliance of U.S.-based grassroots organizations, facilitated the process, including a 2004 meeting of 50 grassroots organizations in Washington, D.C. The 22 organizations spearheading the planning came of age in response to varying forms of community displacement resulting from the last 20-plus years of neoliberal economic policies. read full story / add a comment

The New York Times is currently reporting that the United States and Britain will soon move additional warships and strike aircraft into the Persian Gulf region to be within striking range of Iran. Senior U.S. officers told the paper that the increase in naval power should not be viewed as preparations for any offensive strike against Iran. But they acknowledged that the ability to hit Iran would be increased. read full story / add a comment

The killing of local aboriginal man Mulruniji by Snr. Sgt. Chris Hurley on Palm Island, Queensland, that resulted in a spontaneous riot and deployment of paramilitary police will not lead to the charging of the police officer concerned. In the history of the state of Queensland that has seen many aboriginal deaths in custody not one police officer has ever faced charges. This killing was captured in the watchhouse CCTV, the coroner put the cause of death squarely on Snr. Sgt. Hurley. The Queenlsland Labor Govt. has decided not to pursue charges. see link for more info http://melbourne.indymedia.org/news/2006/12/134272.php read full story / add a comment

The Moriarity Tribunal has given us a clear indication of the past state of Irish politics. if we are to learn anything, it should be that political life must be more carefully scrutinised and that initatives proposed by politicians must be more openly debated before taxpayers are asked to pay for such proposals. Charlie was not a bad man, he was just give toys to play with and his friends made the game more real. read full story / add a comment

The world today is in no doubt as to the criminal status of the illegal detention centre of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The past three years have not only witnessed unprecedented assaults on the founding principles of the USA by the Bush regime, but also on international law and convention. The government of the USA is clearly rogue, a fact in which its officials delight. The contempt the neo-cons display for their own citizens is only exceeded by the extreme disdain they exhibit toward the international community. Each day that Guantanamo Bay remains operational is a day of unspeakable psychological horror, torture and injustice. read full story / add a comment

Consider joining the Catholic Workers as they vigil and leaflet outside the Aviation Authority. The Aviation Authority authorises the refueling of CIA torture flights and the 3,000 (presently) U.S. troops passing through Shannon Airport weekly to an illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq. If you are opposed to the war, consider making your opposition visible one hour a week in your community, on your campus or outside a site of significance. read full story / add a comment |
