The union IMPACT brought a case on behalf of 91 civil servants under the European Directive on the protection of fixed-term workers, implemented as the Protection of Employees (Fixed Term Workers) Act 2003 in Ireland. The case demands of equality of treatment with comparable established colleagues and of extension of retrospective benefits to 2001, the date agreed to by the state as a signatory to the Directive, rather than 2003 when the Act was finally signed. read full story / add a comment

On 13 April, riot police smashed the gates and climbed over the walls of Kian Tyre factory, in the outskirts of Tehran, to forcefully evict hundreds of striking workers. Scores were beaten up and arrested, with many hospitalised Farhad Ghaasemi, WPI reporter in Tehran said: “They used axes and kicked in doors and began brutally attacking the workers with electric batons. Roaming the site on motorbikes, they battered anyone who happened to be on their way. Scores were arrested and at least two busloads of detained workers were taken out of the factory”. read full story / add a comment

The purpose of this article (see below the video) is to provide further support to the statement upheld by politicians, academic and legal experts that the Lisbon Treaty is a constitution. The emphasis on this fact is vital because from this fact it follows that the Lisbon Treaty needs referendum not only in Ireland but in all of the 27 EU member states. Because the Lisbon Treaty a constitution, it is crucial to understand that no constitution ever permits the act of overthrowing it, i.e never allows the act of replacing it with another one without the permission of a country's citizens. Therefore the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty without referendums in the other 26 states, is a dictatorial power-grab over Europe. (Please see the document referred at the end of the article.) With this article we wish to call Ireland to Vote NO to Lisbon Treaty! Vote NO to a constitution that establishes a dictatorial federal regime with powers over all Europe. read full story / add a comment

Summary: Mordechai Vanunu, the Israeli whistleblower will be given a visa to live in Norway, initial reports from Norway suggest at present. Vanunu spent eighteen years in an Israeli prison for revealing that Israel has nuclear weaapons. For the past four years (since his release), he has lived under the most severe restrictions to his freedom. He is not allowed to travel freely, not leave Israel even to the occupied West Bank or Gaza, nor speak to foreigners. German Chancellor Angela Merkel is addressing the National Forum on Europe in St Patrick's Hall in Dublin Castle at 3pm tomorrow followed by President of the EU Commission Manuel Barroso speaking this Thurs. Some of us will be going along to suggest to Angela and Barroso that if they are in any way interested in democracy they won't be afraid to hold a referendum in Germany and in the other EU states and let the people decide. All welcome. There should be some media attention around the visits so getting involved in polls or radio debates on the treaty would be great. We're being conned but it doesn't have to be quietly. Yes, they'll try to do it anyway but why make it easier for them. A referendum is the closest thing we have to voicing a direct opinion and this will be the last one we'll have on the EU if we vote yes. read full story / add a comment

All is not as it appears at surface level. Iran condemns Israel as Zionist butchers but at the same time sells oil to Israel. Last month the Swiss signed a multi-billion euro contract for Iran to supply Switzerland with natural gas over the next 25 years. The US State Department condemned the deal and said it would be investigating whether it breached the Iran Sanctions Act. Israel complained too, describing the Swiss minister's visit to Tehran as an "act unfriendly to Israel".On March 30, the Swiss newspaper Sonntag retaliated with the revelation that Israel, supposedly observing an ironclad boycott of all things Iranian, has been buying Iranian oil for years. read full story / add a comment

By creating a provincial parliament for the nine counties of Ulster, within the framework of a new Ireland the partition system would be disestablished and the problem of the border removed. The Protestant people of Ulster would have a working majority and would have immediate access to power. Furthermore, the devolution of power to the local level would ensure for each community the opportunity to foster its own traditions and culture. Each region and community would have within itself the immediate power to deal with its own social and economic problems. Such devolution of power from one central authority to the people is the essence of democracy. The Nationalist population would be of sufficient strength to ensure a strong and credible opposition within reach of power. For the first time in fifty years we would see a normalization of politics with an end to the domination of one community by another and the resultant frustration and conflict. read full story / add a comment |
