The right-wing parties’ decision for Denmark to participate in the Iraq war is not popular among the voters. And not at all among the women. The Danish People’s Party has a particular problem with the Danish forces in Iraq. For the first time, an opinion poll from Gallup shows a majority opposed to Danish participation in the Iraq war. 52 percent of Danes do not think it was a correct decision, while 43 percent support participation. This was reported in the Danish conservative daily, Berlingske Tidende, on Sunday. read full story / add a comment

You wouldnt normally expect The Economist to write a favourable article about Unions but in this weeks edition (6 Dec) there is a piece about the Unionisation of janitors in Houston, Texas. The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) has organised 5,000 janitors, some readers might remember the Ken Loach film, Bread And Roses, which dealt with the SEIU organised strike in Los Angeles. As The Economist requires a paid subscription to view this article, I am posting it here in full. read full story / add a comment

This weekend, as the French state celebrated 100 years since the law that seperates state :+: church in education and beyond. French youth have enjoyed secular secondary education and been taught the values of the republic "liberty equality fraternity" fo 100 years. As insidiously the triad of republican values has seen added the quaternion (*) "Equity" added. France has changed: 500 French youth were attacked by police last night for attempting a rave in Rennes, shouting as near 40 were arrested "Liberté!". On Sundays I occasionally publish an opinion piece:- I want you to ponder how Mrs Larkin told Jim he looked great just because she was on her knees, and then she arose, and that beautiful human detail is what seperates you from and joins you to the birth of the Irish Labour movement. Jim thought it was such a funny line, and would be a secret testament to "what its all about" = Arise now. read full story / add a comment

Our march says that the work of Christian Peacemaker Team in Iraq is
like the work that we're doing here as we march to Guantánamo.
We're all looking for just and humane treatment for all the detainees
whether in Guantánamo, Iraq or other hidden detention camps we
can't reach. -Sr. Anne Montgomery, Marcher and member of Christian Peacemaker Teams in Iraq The only thing standing between us and the Guantánamo prisoners is George Bush's permission. -Gary Ashbeck with the Witness Against Torture read full story / add a comment

A fundamental feature of extremist regimes is the absolute requirement of an adversary. If a real or perceived enemy loses its opponent status then a bogeyman (under the bed) mentality is cultivated until the negative effects of that strategy (fear, loathing etc.) can be successfully superimposed onto a suitable ‘candidate’. The ‘successful’ candidate would then immediately attract the fear, loathing and violence of the extremist society (or group) in question. read full story / add a comment

Thirty thousand colombian asylum seekers wait to be accepted into Ecuador. Some of them come from the region of Putumayo, south of Colombia. This is the most affected area by the indiscriminate spraying of crops from the air that US companies, in association with the Uribe Administration, have been carrying out since december 1999 in order to eliminate coca plantations. Or so they say. Since the beginning of this “War on drugs” instigated by the Plan Colombia, food crops have been totally devastated, animals are killed by the millions in the area, people suffer from skin and gastric disorders, and some doctors talk of the high risk of getting cancer, suffering miscarriages, genetic mutations…these people from south Colombia are exposed to, due to the spraying of their lands that breaks all sorts of environmental and human rights laws. But, what’s happening in Putumayo? And why? read full story / add a comment

Lest anyone think that strike action is old-fashioned the main Italian unions for workers in print and broadcast media have called a 48 hour series of stoppages starting today. This is the third strike in Italy by media workers this year not including the general strike of November 25th & the fifth strike in the media sector in Europe in 2005. Most recently the workers of Liberation the French left-daily protested the rescue package of their company, and earlier this year a one day stoppage at the BBC saw workers there fight lay offs and continuing privitisation. read full story / add a comment
