This evening, the Palestine Solidarity Society in Galway University are hosting Iyad Burnat's powerful documentary on the non-violent resistance to the building of the Israeli Apartheid Wall and the building of Jews only illegal colonising "settlements" on the expropriated land of Bil'in, a small Palestinian village, 12 kilometers (7 mi) west of the city of Ramallah in the West Bank. Electronic Intifada is reporting : "Obama picks pro-Israel hardliner for top post" whilst Haaratz describing the the choosing as: "Obama kick-starts transition, picks Israeli Rahm Emanuel as chief of staff" http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1034635.html As Ali Abunimah puts it in his EI article: "During the United States election campaign, racists and pro-Israel hardliners tried to make an issue out of President-elect Barack Obama's middle name, Hussein. Such people might take comfort in another middle name, that of Obama's pick for White House Chief of Staff: Rahm Israel Emanuel ... Rahm Emanuel was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1959, the son of Benjamin Emanuel, a pediatrician who helped smuggle weapons to the Irgun, the Zionist militia of former Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin, in the 1940s. The United States of America took a giant step in the last week in the field of civil rights and human development when a man with Offaly ancestry was chosen to lead the nation. While there is no legal bar against people from Offaly or their descendants holding high office in the U.S., many were surprised that voters were able to overcome the widespread prejudice against the county. Men from Offaly (known as BIFFO's) have often encountered a "glass ceiling" whereby they would be trusted with a glass, but not a pint. read full story / add a comment

1st Nov 2008: On a bright Saturday morning in Dublin, around 80 activists from all over the country gathered at the British Embassy in Ballsbridge to commemorate the 91st Anniversary of the Balfour Declaration and to highlight the British State's ongoing support for Israeli human rights abuses. In a speech in July, Barack Obama stated that he wants to "re-deploy" American troops in Iraq "carefully" with their safety in mind and "responsibly" leaving behind a "sovereign" Iraqi government that can "take responsibility for its own future." In doublespeak that means Barack Obama is as committed as George W. Bush was to the imperialist American project in the Middle East - toppling anti-American elites and replacing them with pro-American elites to administer the American agenda. The Moyross Residents’ Alliance is representative of both homeowners and tenants living in Moyross and was formed to ensure that all residents have their rights upheld during the regeneration process. The local regeneration committees seem to be failing in this regard and are not representing our views.
