This morning at 8.30 the Mossos arrived and carried out the eviction of anohter of Barcelonas most important social centres, Ruina Amalia, one of the last few squatted spaces in the Raval nieghbourhood of the old city. The centre was another of the critical spaces and nodal points of BCN's social movements, about 20 people lived in the squatted space and its social centre hosted a wide range of services and support to the social movement: Okupa office, ASF (architects sans frontiers: arx without borders) support, free internet access, Carcoma the popular carpenter, costume workshop, free shop, kilombo library, theatre and dance space, flamenco patio with cheap bar and cafe. This is another severe blow to critical nodal points of the cities social movement. It seems blow after blow has been dealt out with no real response from the movements..... Is it time for a change of thinking or acting? read full story / add a comment ![]()

Student activists at Tehran University confronted "President" Ahmadinejad and chanted "Death To The Dictator". The Universioties are no longer a safe haven for Ahmadinejad. About 100 students staged a rare protest yesterday against Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, calling him a "dictator" as he gave a speech marking the beginning of the academic year at Tehran University. The protest prompted scuffles between the demonstrators and hardline university students loyal to Ahmadinejad, who ignored chants of "Death to dictator" and continued his speech on the merits of science and pitfalls of Western-style democracy, witnesses said. The hardline students chanted back "Thank you president" as police looked on from the outside the university's gates. No physical altercations took place, and the protesters dispersed after the car carrying Ahmadinejad left the campus. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Digna Ochoa was a human rights defender who defended people who had suffered serious violations of their human rights. To this date the investigation into her murder has made little progress and the suspicion is growing that the judicial authorities in Mexico have no desire to bring to justice the people responsible. Jesús Ochoa is Digna's brother. Since her death he has campaigned tirelessly on her behalf. As part of a tour of European countries and as a guest of Amnesty International he will be talking in Dublin on Thursday 18 October at 8.00 PM in The Teachers Club on Parnell Square. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Yesterday night the switch was flicked on one of the largest satellite arrays on the planet. Named after Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen the system brings together his dilletentism or whims as a mega-geek & the anglo-saxon culture industrially vital world of SETI and the very murky US involvement in deep Space radio telescope exploration in one project with one stated aim :- The search for intelligent Alien life. I'm going to treat today's "system booting" as a piece of tech-news & come at it from the ever reliable anti-trust angle. Thus I hope to raise awareness of the capitalist & philosophical elements of the project rather than spurn the "tinfoil hat" brigade onto anything sillier than they've achieved mostly not by being too suspicious or paranoid but rather by not putting their theories in social or historical context. To that end I'll mix news with a bit of analysis & bit of opinion. read full story / add a comment ![]()

On the 4th of October the National Executive of Batasuna, the Basque independence party, were arrested by the Spanish police at a meeting in Segura. This week marks the twentieth anniversery of a man murdered to protect a high ranking British agent within the Provisional IRA. It also sees the seventh anniversery of his grandson who himself was murdered only yards away. Yet the ability to commemorate either of these republicans has been made impossible by a criminal gang operating within the Ballymurphy area. How could this happen in 'republican' west Belfast? read full story / add a comment |
