Never before have we issued such an urgent call for nationwide unity to stop cruelty to animals in this country. This year we’ve got a genuine and real opportunity to get long lasting and historic protection for animals and to compel industry and society to respect and treat animals fairly. For many people reading today the issue breaks your heart, but on December 6th we have one last opportunity to send a huge message to decision makers at government level that the new and revised animal welfare bill due to be released in 2010 must contain such strong measures to protect animals and penalize those that seek to profit and get kicks out of animal abuse. read full story / add a comment

Thanks to the publication of a British police intelligence "spotter card" issued to rank & file coppers for a climate change protest in 2007 this week by a British newspaper, many people regardless of whether they are activists in the UK or Ireland or indeed elsewhere in the EU are wondering about their constitutional and statutory rights in the face of the European wide creation of intelligence databases by police forces. Whereas those whose images appeared without prior consent in this week's British media may have recourse to legal action and a bit of chatter, Irish political activists, protesters & ordinary citizens thus far enjoy no public recognition of the existence of such databases in Ireland nor it would appear have any mechanism to ensure that their details if not guilty of any criminal offence are removed from the intelligence files of the Garda Siochana. read full story / add a comment

Yesterday evening the Cork branch of the Worker’s Solidarity Movement hosted a talk by South African anarchist and ZABALAZA Anarchist Communist Front (ZACF) member, Jonathan. The ZACF is an organisation of anarchist individuals from South Africa who identify with the communist tradition within Anarchism. The front is organised around the principles of theoretical and tactical unity, collective responsibility and federalism. Their activities include study and theoretical development, anarchist agitation and propaganda, and participation within the class struggle. read full story / add a comment

It is impossible to give credit to one place, one time, one person for the starting of any social movement, as it takes the ideas, energy and enthusiasm of countless people to reach a 'Critical Mass', but San Francisco, September 1992, certainly marked itself clearly on the map as a launch-pad for the Critical Mass movement, going on from there to spread throughout the world to all nine(?) corners of the globe and taking place in an estimated 325 cities. Now after seventeen years it is still growing and currently takes place in four cities around Ireland (that we know of?). In true DIY style Critical Mass co-incidentally returned to the streets of Belfast and Dublin simultaneously on Friday the 25th of September last after being sorely missed by many for a long time. To their credit Cork and Galway have been keeping it going for many years now (albeit in an on-off fashion). read full story / add a comment

Ever notice how the police on demonstrations seem to know your name and use it? How they take pictures and video of specific individuals but not others? This report from London might explain things. Of course, the gardaí don't use similar tactics and systems for catagorizing "trouble-makers" and people "who may instigate offences". Oh no.
