It was inevitable that the economic catastrophe caused by Fianna Fáil’s economic policies would dominate, almost exclusively, the Euro Election Campaign so far. However, it is also vital that we focus on some vital issues pertaining to the future direction of the European Union. It is quite deplorable that the guarantees that the Government says it will have from the EU with regard to the Lisbon Treaty have not been published so that they could be debated during the current campaign. However when it comes to the thrust toward militarisation of the EU firmly implanted in the Lisbon Treaty, no guarantees can change what are very categorical dictates to Member States. read full story / add a comment

The European election campaign is now in it's final push. The main leaflet for Joe Higgins' campaign has been produced, with the hope of getting it into 200,000 homes in the next week. We have produced 2,000 new full colour posters which we need to get up. In order to do that we are launching an appeal for volunteers to help out - take a bundle of leaflets for your estate or one nearby, spare an hour to put up some posters, hand out leaflets with Joe in town or donate towards the cost of the campaign. Simply log on to the link below to help out. read full story / add a comment

Balazs Nagy: Can you tell a few words about yourself and how you got to the situation that you are in? Victor Agosto: Ok, I am Victor Agosto, I joined the Army of the United States in August of 2005. I was sent to Iraq in October of 2006. And I stayed there until November of 2007. And while I was in Iraq I turned against both wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. And now my unit is sending me to Afghanistan - or wants to send me to Afghanistan - but I have already told them that I am not going to go and that I am not going to obey any orders supporting my unit's deployment to Afghanistan. read full story / add a comment

Since 2006, MAOR have been actively engaged in a surprising range of activities that push the boundaries of political discussion and bring the issues to the streets, the airwaves and back to communities. This week MAOR Street Theatre Group took to the streets of Derry in an exciting street theatre event, highlighting the human rights abuses perpetrated by Multinational giants that the Irish government is happy to do business with. Earlier this week Royal Dutch Shell went on trial for complicity in the torture and killing of Nigerian protestors in 1995. read full story / add a comment

June 2nd 1967 was a watershed in German postwar history so pivotal that the date would be used by a terrorist grouping as their name. Benno Ohnesorg was shot dead by a policeman. Ohnesorg had been peacefully protesting the visit of the then Shah of Iran to the then West Berlin. It has now emerged the policeman in question, Karl-Heinz Kurras had been a member of the STASI since 1955 though there is no evidence he was acting on their orders at the time of the shooting. read full story / add a comment

Shell to Sea Galway pulled off a great publicity stunt last Saturday on the first night of the Galway ocean races of which Topaz is a main sponsor. The aim was to inform people that Topaz is Shell and encourage people to boycott Topaz. They arranged for a Kila member to wear a Shell to Sea t-shirt while playing on the Topaz mainstage, handed out fliers in the crowd and had several anti-shell/anti-topaz banners in the area. One banner which read 'Let's Do It Galway, Send Shell to Hell, Corribsos.com' was unfurled at the foot of the stage while Kila was playing, and when security attempted to take the banner from Shell to Sea and Climate Camp activists in the crowd, a Kila member came down from the stage, retrieved the banner from the security guard, and put it up on stage for everyone to see! read full story / add a comment

The animal liberation movement has the mammoth task of exploding the myths behind so-called "humanely produced" animal products, such as cage-free and free-range eggs or meat that is "certified humane." We try to expose the truth behind the marketing of food products that supposedly cause less harm to the animals used to produce them--foods that are meant to assuage the guilt of people who are concerned about animals (sort of) but who stop short of not eating them. Of course this eases their consciences about causing suffering to animals. It is a half measure. read full story / add a comment
