Joe Higgins is standing for the Dublin Constituency in the Euro Elections to be held on Friday, June 5th

Joe Higgins, Socialist Party Euro Election Candidate, has today signed a pledge from Bird Watch Ireland, promising to fight for the environment.

As well well as defending the rights of workers, young people and the unemployed, Joe is also a fighter for real action to halt climate change and defend our natural environment. Joe Higgins argues that people and the planet must come before the profits of big business and the rich.

Here is the Bird Watch Ireland pledge:

As an MEP I will help to:

1. Ensure the Irish natural environment, and the public benefits it provides, is afforded legal protection through the better implementation of nature conservation standards, like Natura 2000.

2. Make sure the use of our marine resources is in tune with nature. Only healthy seas can deliver fish stocks and buffer against climate change.

3. Work to deliver public benefits, such as a healthy wildlife-rich environment, from targeted agricultural measures and subsidies with a changed Common Agricultural Policy.

4. Support solutions to climate change that work with and not against our ecosystems and wildlife.
