There are a few ways in which International Women's Day can be approached. It can be ignored. This is what mostly happens in the mainstream media. Unlike Valentines Day and Mothers Day, cards aren't given and presents aren't bought. With no profit to be made out of it, the day is not exactly one that jumps out and grabs the attention. read full story / add a comment

What is happening? IRMA, the Irish Recorded Music Association, wants to block Irish Internet users' access to certain websites. They have written letters to Irish Internet providers telling them, under threat of legal action, to allow IRMA to tell them what websites to block. Eircom has already agreed to this. They will settle every application for website blocking out of court. No sites have been blocked yet. We have limited time to act before the bans are set. A copy of the letter sent out to Irish ISPs has been kindly made available by Michele Neylon of Blacknight Solutions. Read it here. read full story / add a comment

One reason graffiti is such a volatile issue is because it touches on many fundamental questions of urban life. What constitutes public space? Who gets to decide how it will be used? Is advertising in public spaces a form of pollution? Jon Reiss’s 2008 documentary Bomb present a wide sampling of graffiti art from around the world, and a variety of viewpoints relating to graffiti. He includes interviews with everyone from first-generation graffiti artists to academic theorists: segments shot in South Africa, Brazil, Europe and Japan are particularly useful in broadening the discussion. read full story / add a comment

Over ONE MILLION people have died in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Ireland has participated in and been complicit in these wars. These Iraqi and Afghan people are our brothers, sisters and our children, not, "some others" in a "them and us" war of resources. Show your solidarity with the victims of a war that used Ireland as one of its principle launching pads. Over ONE MILLION armed US troops and thousands of tons of munitions, passed through Shannon airport. Over 1,000 CIA related flights were refuelled at Shannon airport, many of them associated with the US Torture rendition programme. read full story / add a comment

Year after year, ARAN and caring people around the world have urged the Canadian government to end the annual seal hunt. Last year, more than 205,000 seals were killed in the annual seal slaughter and in a few short weeks this devastating slaughter of seals for their skins will begin. As the world turns its attention to Canada which will host the 2010 Winter Olympics, we have an excellent opportunity to shine the spotlight on the barbaric seal slaughter. read full story / add a comment

Discussion chaired by Frank McDonald, journalist with The Irish Times, on a broad range of architectural and developmental issues that have become apparent in Celtic Tiger Dublin. Contributors include Dr. Gary Boyd, Ciarán Cuffe TD, Robert Ballagh and Siobhain Ní Éanaigh. The majority of the speakers were very critical of Celtic Tiger Ireland, a change from previous "architectural discussion". The talk happened in Docklands "white elephant", CHQ, aka: Stack A. Sunday August 10 2008 was the day of the discussion, day after the worst rainfall that Ireland had ever seen in the month of august, a wake up call if ever there was one of how we have to adress climate chaos...http://radio.indymedia.org/es/node/17169 read full story / add a comment |
