This evening, the Palestine Solidarity Society in Galway University are hosting Iyad Burnat's powerful documentary on the non-violent resistance to the building of the Israeli Apartheid Wall and the building of Jews only illegal colonising "settlements" on the expropriated land of Bil'in, a small Palestinian village, 12 kilometers (7 mi) west of the city of Ramallah in the West Bank. Such people might take comfort in another middle name, that of Obama's pick for White House Chief of Staff: Rahm Israel Emanuel ... Rahm Emanuel was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1959, the son of Benjamin Emanuel, a pediatrician who helped smuggle weapons to the Irgun, the Zionist militia of former Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin, in the 1940s. The United States of America took a giant step in the last week in the field of civil rights and human development when a man with Offaly ancestry was chosen to lead the nation. While there is no legal bar against people from Offaly or their descendants holding high office in the U.S., many were surprised that voters were able to overcome the widespread prejudice against the county. Men from Offaly (known as BIFFO's) have often encountered a "glass ceiling" whereby they would be trusted with a glass, but not a pint. read full story / add a comment
