One of the arguments for the way Shell want to operate the Corrib gas field has always been that using a production pipeline/ onshore refinery would limit the need for helicopter flights for workers. Flights to and from offshore rigs are said to be dangerous. Local people have always countered that there was an element of choice in working for Shell, while they had no choice about living next to a high pressure production pipeline. Now however, the director of air safety for Shell has said that helicopter flights are not actually that dangerous at all. An examination of 2,000 helicopter accidents has shown that it was poor air safety systems that were the problem, and the majority of accidents could have been prevented by following more stringent procedures. read full story / add a comment

Limerick City Council claim signs erected by the Lisbon Campaign for Middle East Justice and Peace (LCMEJP) were an "incitement" The Council removed at least 5 large "No to Lisbon" referendum signs from locations around the city between the 26th May and the 11th June without informing anyone. Gardai in Henry st., Roxboro and Mary St. stations have been investigating this matter for over four weeks. The story was covered in the Limerick Leader two weeks in a row and in the Limerick Independent and the Irish Times but Council officials never thought it appropriate to contact the Gardai, LCMEJP or the printers event though contact details were on the signs. read full story / add a comment ![]()

A photo-review of WSM activities in Munster cities during the Lisbon referendum campaign. The Cork WSM branch, with the help of other comrades from Limerick and Dublin, did 4 info stalls on the streets of Cork, Limerick and Waterford as part of our campaign activities. Each was blessed with good sunny weather and a public mood in some sympathy with our anarchist vote No message. We gave out thousands of leaflets, and made new contacts across the cities. It was also good to see what other campaigns were active on the ground across Munster. read full story / add a comment ![]()

The government is pursuing a policy of centralising health services into a small number of regional centres. The policy has been advanced under the title of "Centres of Excellence". But there is no evidence for the 'robotic centralisation' of acute hospital services, including cancer. But if you want to cut the the public health system––to make room for private ‘providers’––‘centralisation’ is a lethally effective way of doing it. And funneling all patients into a small number of large units facilitates the collection of specimens ... read full story / add a comment |
