Main speaker: Conor Lenihan T.D., Minister for Integration

“…a very fine journalist, an excellent man, but on Northern questions a renegade or white nigger”
Those were the words from a conversation with the British Ambassador to Ireland at a lunch meeting in 1969, which he duly reported without delay to his masters at the British Foreign Office. But who said them and to whom did they refer?

The author lays bare the power structure of the newspaper which insists on transparency and openness for all other institutions in Irish life, but draws a discreet veil over its own activities. The Directors of the Irish Times, along with the Editor, have to swear an Oath of Secrecy before a Commissioner for Oaths each year. This book is essential for understanding one of the most important institutions in Irish life and therefore the dynamics of Irish society itself. read full story / add a comment

Why Anarchafeminism?
A women-only discussion hosted by RAG

RAG, the Revolutionary Anarchafeminist Group is now in its third year. The collective was set up in order to explore our ideas and produce a magazine, the Rag. Meetings are held weekly on Mondays, but the first Monday of every month is an open meeting, in which non-members are invited to a workshop or discussion.

On Monday 7th April, the open meeting was entitled “Why Anarchafeminism?” The purpose of the meeting was to encourage women outside of RAG to question and explore their ideas about feminism and anarchism and to draw links between the two. Also, it gave members of the group a chance to revisit the fundamental aspects of our beliefs. The following is a personal account by two of us of the discussion. It is limited by the quality of our notes and recollections. It does not present a RAG position on anything, but is simply an attempt to share some of the ideas that were touched upon with those who were unable to attend. read full story / add a comment
Don't ignore the Homeless
dublin / housing / feature Friday April 11, 2008 16:36 by Pip, Damo, Ger, Foxey, Jot   text 13 comments (last - friday april 18, 2008 10:34)   image 2 images
The following article was written by an Adult Education discussion and research group based in the north inner city. It was a collective effort by Ger, John, Pip, Jonathan Wheelock and Damian. For us it is important to discuss homelessness because it is not just something that we pass by on the streets guiltily ignoring people or handing out a few pence depending on our humour. It is definitely not something we just read about in reports or newspapers- it is a problem that we have or could experience in the future. Everyone in the media talks about the Celtic Tiger but we don’t see it in our areas and we see more people on the streets rather than less and we want to know why.

Usk 'Superdump' protest , An Bord Pleanála Offices, Dublin , Friday April 11 , 2008.

"RESIDENTS of the Usk area, just outside Kilcullen, are continuing their campaign against the siting of a so-called superdump in their area. The proposal by Greenstar was originally turned down by Kildare Co Council because it contravened the county plan but, following an An Bord Plean·la hearing, the board over-turned that decision and gave permission for the landfill project to go ahead. This was despite the fact that, after a hearing lasting four and a half days, the An Bord Pleanála inspector actually recommended against the siting of the dump at Usk...."
