![]() ![]() Sunday's referendum defeat may turn out to be a blessing in disguise for the Venezuelan Left
An analysis of the recent Venezuelan referendum including coverage of the issues by both alternative and mainstream media. This article includes some factual data about the reality of Venezuela’s economy which effectively counters the “conventional wisdom” arising from propaganda spread by much of the mainstream media. The article also draws some interesting contrasts between the political situation in Venezuela and its next door neighbour, Colombia. read full story / add a comment![]()

Yesterday evening, the Galway Bin Charges Campaign comprising outraged members of the public, activists from the SWP, SP, Sinn Fein and Galway Alliance Against War vented their anger outside and inside Galway City Council buildings against a proposal that, if adopted, would amount to a front frontal assault on the city's poor, thankfully, conscience prevailed, as such, GBCC wholeheartedly applaudes the city councillors for successfully defending the full waiver on refuse charges at the Budget 2008 meeting on Monday night. Dette Mc Loughlin (SWP), spearhead of the campaign group said it was admirable, decent and right that councillors across party divides stood firmly against the proposed attack on the waiver system. read full story / add a comment

Yassamine Mather writes about the US threats against Iran and about the developing resistance in Iran which opposes both the US and the Theoocracy. Over the last week, the threat of an air attack on Iran has continued to be highlighted, while the US increased pressure on European and Asian banks and companies to follow its lead in imposing further sanctions. Of course, ordinary people in Iran are already paying the price for the policies of the warmongers in the US and EU. There are reports of new shortages every day and many workers fear that sanctions imposed on two major national banks - Bank Melli and Bank Saderat - will disrupt payment of their salaries (most major firms in Iran use these two banks to pay wages). read full story / add a comment ![]()

In the aftermath of the referendum defeat, many questions are posed for the future of Chavez's 'socialist' revolution. Will the strengthened right-wing opposition feel emboldened enough to strike another blow or will the working class, urban poor and peasant masses take the defeat as a sign that they must now move independently to defend and extend the gains won under Chavez? What is necessary to achieve this? read full story / add a comment

Yesterday afternoon, friends and family of Robin Hennessy gathered under an overcast sky in Kanturk graveyard to bid farewell to a stalwart of the anti-war movement and other social justice causes. A CIA controlled Learjet reg no N71PG was refuelled at dawn this morning at Shannon and made a hasty exit within the hour. It had been due two hours earlier, in the hours of darkness as usual. Unlike the two other CIA planes recently refuelled at Shannon, Gulfstream N476LC refuelled on 30 Oct 07 and Gulfstream N478GS refuelled on 30 Nov 07, both of which were notorious torture rendition planes, we know very little about N71PG so far. Please carry out some research and try and dig up its CIA history. We should remember that when the now infamous N379P, known as the Guantanamo Express was first seen at Shannon and logged on indymedia by Tim Hourigan, we were not even aware of the CIA torture rendition programme. Such murky and gross violations of human rights are by their very nature very difficult to expose. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Chavez has very narrowly lost the referendum on two proposed block reforms to the 1999 constitution of the Bolivarian republic of Venezuela. These being "block a" indefinite re-election & "block b" votes for 16 year olds. It is too early to apportion blame or even theorise that the socialist project which is associated with Hugo Chavez is damaged by this. Though naturally that is what both sides (chav and antiChav) are doing. Hugo had in his closing speeches in the campaign railed against an alliance of Spain, its King, the USA and Colombia and then in a typical performance brought in the nazi's, but left out Farc (video attached) whereas the opposing side gurggled about dictatorships, pointed at Bolivia's worrysome crises of the last week & gleefully clapped their little handies when this time they won what Chavez curiously called a "Pyrrhic vicory". That being a classical reference to a naval battle of the early Roman empire whose victory was had at such great cost as to be worthless. read full story / add a comment ![]()
