A young member of Ógra Sinn Féin last Saturday night noticed that a building was flying a Union Flag in Newcastle, County Down Ireland. This "butcher's apron" flag is of course offensive to many Irish people, and since the building belonged to the avowedly sectarian "Orange Order" the young man decided that the best way to peacefully protest was to scale the building and remove the offending symbol. Sadly, after removing the flag, the young ÓSF member lost his footing and fell from the roof, injuring his arm. He has received medical treatment and is recovering. read full story / add a comment

Fatima Regeneration Project Phase 2 is again plunged into turmoil as a consequence of Developer P.Elliott/Maplewood acting in contravention of agreement with local residents despite their co-operation in what could be only best described as a un selfish act of burden bearing by a minority of residents in order to achieve benefits that would be by and large enjoyed by many people some from far wider afield from their local community. read full story / add a comment

From Friday 7th to Sunday 9th September 2007 men, women and children from every corner of this island - and indeed from much further away - will gather in Glencolumbkille, Donegal. They will come in busses, by car, bicycle or on foot. They will erect CAMP HAVANA and walk the hills surrounding the valley of Glencolumbcille. Some will take the challenging hike across the Slieve League ridge, some will use a more relaxed walking route and some will only go as far as the bus can take them. Some may even attempt to dance salsa! All of them will enjoy Europe's highest sea - cliffs which are surrounded by scenery incomparable to anywhere else on this earth (see http://marette.free.fr/panorama_irlande/panorama1.html). Of course we are not just gathering to admire spectacular scenery. We will gather in what is going to be the biggest show of friendship with people from another island - at least since last year’s Camp Havana. read full story / add a comment

There has been a plethora of stories and images on this newswire in recent months of the suppression of Republican Political Dissent, the groups range from branches of the IRSP, through Eirigi and the re-opening of the Roisin Mc Aliskey extradition case by German Authorities. The links to the articles are included in the body of the text. In tandem with the issue of political suppression the Fianna Fail Governments of this most recent period of Irish Historical Development have aided collusion enquiry but continuously stated that "no criminal charges will arise". read full story / add a comment

This letter gives an update on the continued oppression being inflicted on Iranian workers by the Iranian Dictatorship. It outlines why continued silidarity is necessary. Full text at link. Your August 9th international day of action was hugely welcomed and appreciated. Even if this has not yet led to the release of Mansoor Ossanlou and Mahmoud Salehi, it was a unique show of solidarity with workers and labour activists in Iran who are under constant persecution by the regime. I’m sure you are aware that in the past few months the Islamic regime in Iran has stepped up its persecution of protesting workers, women and students. The current wave of repression and executions is specifically targeting the widespread protests and strikes and the general anti-government climate in the country. The regime wants to intimidate the people. That’s why it has put up gallows in most cities and hanged scores in public in the past few weeks. read full story / add a comment

This an excerpt from a letter sent to Amnesty International, Human Rights Organizations and Student Associations and Groups regarding the illtreatment of students held in Iranian prisons. Full text of letter at the link. I am writing to you regarding the imprisoned students of Amirkabir University in Tehran. The Islamic Republic of Iran has launched a new wave of barbaric oppression in universities. Many students have been banned from studying; many others have been arrested and tortured. Three students of Amirkabir University, Majid Tavakoli, Ahmad Qassaban, and Ehsan Mansouri, have been accused of writing and distributing articles against Islamic Republic authorities and against Islam and they have been arrested. The aforementioned students have rejected the accusations; they have enough evidence to show that those articles were counterfeits made by the regime’s agents to be used against students. read full story / add a comment

"To endanger such a place is a symptom of the greed, corruption and disrespect being shown for nature, people and our environment. The solution to this controversy is to re-route 7 km of the double- tolled Motorway, but it seems that vested interests in this area have been preventing the consideration of any alternatives.
