For the last few weeks new dialysis patients in Limerick have had to travel all the way to Kilkenny, Tullamore, Trallee and Galway in order to get treated. This involves a two hour drive there and another two hours back at least 3 times a week. On Saturday the 21st of July there will be a debate in Limerick between Socialist Youth and the Young PDs. A key part of that debate will be the ongoing health crisis nationally, the dialysis crisis here in Limerick and the governments ‘co-location’ and privatisation plans. read full story / add a comment

IrishRepublican.net has stepped into the spotlight again. We believe, as republicans, that music plays a vital role in our struggle. Each song tells a story, of an ambush, a republican martyr, or a famous event that has passed us by. We have taken to this belief, and established an online radio station, Irish Republican Radio. Irish Republican Radio currently has several DJ's, and we broadcast 24/7, bringing you songs of struggle, songs of history and martyrs and the odd bit of Ceili. We hope you enjoy the Radio, as well as learn something from it. We also operate a requests system so that we play what you want! read full story / add a comment

No-one has put a street value yet on the 110 kids seized by lifeguards and customs guards today off the Dun Laoighaire coast. Nor has the Taoiseach made a facine statement to the Dail on the increase in irresponsible use of leisure craft in our waters. But analysts like me are quick to point out the links on safety issues as the suicide prevention exercise organised by the Royal St George Yachtclub under the smokescreen title "junior regatta" occured on the same day 11 teachers ran rather than walked down the stairs of the National musem of Natural History causing it to collapse. Ambulances were obviously stretched to the limit and headshots today went untreated. read full story / add a comment

The Corrib scheme has been criticised for being planned as a series of interlinked parts, each one split between different areas of the State's bureaucracy, with no one seeing the whole jigsaw, nobody in charge assessing the full impact of the refinery, different parts of the onshore pipeline, the offshore pipeline, the offshore rig etc. This device is called "project splitting', and is supposed to be illegal under European Union planning law. Now it seems, we can begin to see the Corrib scheme as itself a part of a greater whole, with more refineries planned for the Bellanaboy bridge site, and more onshore pipelines criss-crossing the landscape, as this article from the Western People shows. read full story / add a comment

On Saturday 30th of June, 2007, Choice Ireland held a rally at the Central Bank Plaza at 2pm. The theme of the rally was "Fight for a Woman's Right to Choose". In attendance were Senator David Norris as well as Ivana Bacik and a representative from Doctors for Choice, who spoke on their different experiences of the issue of reproductive rights, as well as the status of the campaign in the light of a recent M-R-B-I poll that presented that a majority of people now support legislating for abortion rights in the Republic of Ireland. read full story / add a comment

It is that time of year again, the time to attack Catholics, or 'taigs', as they are known in unionist parlance. It comes around every year alongside the Orange Order's determination to go into frenzied celebration of its Protestant and ‘British' way of life. It's a bit like if, in Britain, the British National Party decided every year to 'celebrate' Britishness, and this was accompanied by attacks on black people or Muslims, accompanied by thousands of marches, mainly through the areas were the people subject to the attacks live. But wait, that "thousands" can't be right. In Northern Ireland there are over 2,000 marches every year between Easter and late August. Why, that would translate in Britain into tens of thousands of marches. Yes, that sounds about right. read full story / add a comment

On Monday the 2nd of July, a group of around 20 Youth Defence distributed their anti-abortion material throughout the city of Limerick. One of the points upon which they decided to mobilise was the Limerick Family planning clinic (27 Mallow Street, Limerick. Tel: 061 312 02). It is in this building that men and woman go to get information on matters of contraception and abortion clinics . Pro-choice activists believe that women should have access to safe and legal abortion and, equally, that women should be protected from forced abortions.About 5 left wing activists staged a counter protest on the doors of the clinic for the majority of the time the extremists were present. read full story / add a comment

With just days to go before PETA’s Running of the Nudes (www.runningofthenudes.com) PETA members including an Irish activist painted in the Irish flag colors staged a creative event outside the Spanish embassy in London today at 12 noon, wearing little more than body paint and a banner that read “The World Is Watching – Ban Bullfighting”. Every year Irish Animal Rights Action Network members travel to Pamplona to take part in PETA’s Running of the Nudes which is a fun and humane alternative to the cruel running of bulls and bullfighting. Last year over 1000 people took part in this fun event, check out www.ARAN.ie to see more. read full story / add a comment

LEt it be known, recorded acknowledged & easy to find through search engines that during the nightfall which befell the coastal settlement of Rush [population 6,679] in the county of Dublin, the assizes of Fingal of the first to the second dates of the seventh month - A BIG BANG MORE OF A BOOM COMPLETE WITH RATTLES AND A BIT OF SUBSIDENCE AND TOTAL HORRIFIED EFFECTS LIKE wasn't really reported or paid attention to. The BBC sent their man in Rush, Lush and neighbouring Dunabate to talk to locals as the Gardai began their daylight search for bearded men with foreign accents and mindful of the historical resonance of Rush as being the location chosen for two movies shot in 1965 by the names of " The Face of Fu Man Chu", "Ten Little Indians" and the even more significant "Rocket to the Moon" in 1966 were quickly rumoured to extend their search to all strangers in general with or without a TinTin crest. read full story / add a comment |
