Members of the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign manned stalls in Galway and Limerick on Saturday to highlight the clandestine trade in Israeli diamonds. Irish consumers are unaware that most of the diamonds sold in Ireland are crafted in Apartheid Israel, the worlds leading exporter of cut/polished diamonds. This year gemstone exports from Apartheid Israel are expected to approximate $18-$20 billion or more than 150% of Apartheid Israel’s $12 billion military budget for 2007. Diamond exports comprise 30% of Apartheid Israel’s total manufacturing exports and are the backbone of the apartheid regime’s economy. Consumers need to be made aware that when they purchase diamonds they are likely to be supporting the illegal occupation and brutal subjugation of the Palestinian people. read full story / add a comment
Fire at refinery in 2005
international / sci-tech / other press Sunday March 25, 2007 00:01 by Shell watcher   image 1 image
This interesting article from a hearing earlier thos week into safety at energy refineries makes scary reading for anyone who is being forced to live with one of these monsters on their doorstep.

It seems that in the first six weeks of this year, there were 43 reported serious incidents inthe United States, any one of which could have turned into a major disaster.

A former member of Shell's staff spoke about two incidents at the refinery where he worked (in Washington). One of these was a near miss but could easily have resulted in a huge fire cloud, the other caused six deaths among contractors.

It seems in a majority of cases, poor safety procedures are to blame.

Looking back on the 2005 fire I was reminded of this quotation from a Texas City Resident.
Mr. Herman Batist:

"Anytime you live by a plant like this, you've got to worry about this kind of situation. They don't happen very often, but when they do, the first thing you check is which way the wind is blowing"

Protesters from Dublin Shell to Sea managed to evade the heavy security at the Fianna Fáil Ard Fheis this morning. A number of activists held a protest at the main door of the Ard Fheis venue inside the City West complex.

A banner was unfurled and one protester spoke to conference delegates through a megaphone, pointing out that the people of Ireland were being forced by the government to watch as their natural resources were handed over to Shell and Statoil, with nothing coming back, while the people of Erris have to put up with the severe degradation of their environment and unacceptable risks to their lives.

The protesters, some of whom were wearing masks of Bertie Ahern and Noel Dempsey, were soon surrounded by Gardaí and security guards.

Sinn Féin are calling for five hundred new buses for Dublin.

The money is there, but the Govt won't act because the PD's insist that the new buses must be for privately-run routes. So while their neo-con ideology insists on more subsidies for their friends in big business, Dublin commuters have to wait at bus stops.

The Irish department of Foreign Affairs has instructed our South African ambassador
to go to Harare and make known Our State's displeasure at the arresting, beating up and
murder of MDC activists and opposition.

It would be a fine day if they did the same with the US ambassador, but thats
a whole other story, not to mention the one year long attempt by the EU to
elicit response from Dermot on Rendition.

We do not have an ambassador to Zimbabwe.

The twist is this. :
