And the spirit that animates us was evidenced yesterday in the 500 or so people - the majority as far afield as Cork - who showed to bear witness in magnificent measure to the unrelenting struggle of the people of Rossport against a government who has joined forces with a ruthless predatory corporate power in the steamrollering and criminalising of legitimate dissent read full story / add a comment

To date residents and supporters of the Shell To Sea campaign have been staging an ongoing picket outside the Shell gas refinery gates in Ballinaboy. Numbers on average at these chilly weekday morning vigils vary between 40 to 60 people. The picket is a reminder both to the government and the petrochemical multinational that local residents are against the construction of the refinery and the laying of gas pipes in their area. A national day of support was called, inviting people who empathise with this campaign to come up to Mayo on Friday 16th February 2007. This is what one person saw. read full story / add a comment

The Spanish “Transition to democracy” was simply a way to fortify the capitalist economic model. With such Transition, the Spanish dominant class eliminated all sort of social resistance and opened the way for business; they made a Francoism without Franco and presented the Transition as a triumph of the people. It was a history written by the owners of money and their fascist sentries. But Memory, Dignity and Struggle continue read full story / add a comment

The campaign against Shell’s attempts to force a high-powered gas pipeline through the Rossport area of Co. Mayo continues (see http://www.corribsos.com for details of the Shell to Sea campaign or http://www.indymedia.ie for news reports). The Rossport Solidarity Camp was established in the summer of 2005 and since then has provided an important focus for campaigners travelling to Mayo to support the local struggle. Here we speak to Sean Mallory, a WSM member who has spent a considerable amount of time at the camp, about his experiences. Please note that the views expressed are his own and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Camp. read full story / add a comment

As the days draw closer, the huntsman are beginning to shine their knives and hakapics and get their guns ready for a huge killing spree that will see hundreds of thousands of seal being bloodily killed and finally skinned to supply the fur trade yet again. Although the campaign to stop Canada killing seals is drawing closer to a victory we still need to remind those in the Canadian authorities here in Ireland that Ireland does not support the killing of seals and just like many other countries want Canada to Stop Killing Seals read full story / add a comment

The above photographed men have tried and failed to talk themselves out of a corner in relation to domestic and foreign political scandal in the course of the last four years. Their leader, whom some refer to as the 'Teflon Taoiseach' is still at large. He is recognisable by his very sensible shoes and the reek of male cosmetic products. He is not considered dangerous at the present time. read full story / add a comment |
