THE PROBLEM: Ireland is known as the foremost greyhound breeding country in the world. The state-run organization Board na gCon (Greyhound Racing Board) is responsible for the breeding and racing of greyhounds. Approximately 20,000 greyhound puppies are registered each year in Ireland. The number actually born each year is higher, but many "unpromising" dogs are disposed of before registration time. About half of those registered are exported to the UK and the United States, and a small number to Spain and elsewhere. It is estimated that approximately 14,000 greyhounds are "disposed of" in Ireland each year, but the true number will sadly never be known. But this problem is not just confined to Ireland but so many other countries. read full story / add a comment

President Bush junior is presently the most unpopular occupant of the White House since modern polling methods began.

Yesterday he announced his "marshall plan" for the gulf coast on prime time US national TV networks.

Today he spoke again to the nation, from the national cathedral in Washington. The speech has already been hailed as his finest ever. & it only ended 15 minutes ago. Whilst I wait for the transcript which will be appended in the comments here is the other speech yesterday. read full story / add a comment

The fires which killed over 30 people mostly children in Paris this summer, brought impetus to the French migrant support groups, and housing organisations.

Chirac expressed shock and horror. De Villepin's government promised action and a "census" of slum housing where France's african migrants live.

Pretty soon after the police moved into forceably evict the houses on the census list, arresting those within, processing them for deportation and sending them off to the migrant detention centres "for their own good".

Chirac collapsed the same day.

Early this morning a squatted building at 21 rue Maroc (19th arrrond) was evicted in the same style. read full story / add a comment
