Its an total insult to the memory of Connolly that the leader of a corrupt, anti-worker, right-wing party should be invited to this event. SIPTU members should make their feelings known about this misuse of their HQ.

Indeed. When I was a SIPTU member I protested over Liberty Hall being used to advertise the Labour Party. No response. Seems like the place is open to all sorts of chancers.

I think it is disgusting to see Bertie Ahern even allowed into Liberty Hall. It's a further insult to see that he is launching a book on Connolly. I agree with previous posting that Labour should not be allowed space for banners at election time. They are an anti-worker party. Remember Dermot Lacey's vote for bin tax, remember Labour's war in Iraq, Remember Labour's attack on the Nurses when in government.

what a disgrace that comrade Mick o Roirdain joined the right at the book launch last night, Liberty hall. ignoring African women and their children by walking by. while the people he joined treat people who are asylum seekers as second class citizens
is this not the great anti fascist fighter during the Spainish civil war who lectures others about the fifth international brigade. will someone tell me if I am out of place

What a nasty little man you are. Mick O'Riordain has long past shown his integity, his committment and his support for Left Wing values. If he wants to attend a book launch about his hero Connolly who the hell are you to criticise him.

Yes I think that the author, the publisher and those who hosted the event should not have invited the Taoiseach, nor should he have been invited to open the Centre in the first place but to use this is an opportunity to attack one of the really true heroes of the Irish Left is simply contemptible. Unfortunately I am no longer surprised by contributors to Indymedia.

Oh, give it a rest. Michael O'Riordan has spent his life promoting and supporting Stalinist Russia. He did this during the years of that state's worst excesses. Is this to be overshadowed by his involvement (in the 1930s!) in the Spanish Civil War.

O'Riordan was general secretary of a communist party that TOTALLY supported the totalitarian regimes in eastern Europe. They were especially close to the repressive East German regime.

I, for one, do not accept him as representative of the 'best' of the Irish Left. I believe the opposite. He represents the worst elements and it was no surprise to see him hob-nobing with Ahern and the top bureaucrats of the ICTU and SIPTU.

The man is a supporter of one-party totalitarianism.

I was watching Reeling in the Years on TV. It showed how Workers' Party and Communist Party leaders signed books of condolance on the death of the stalinist leaders in the USSR. It also showed the government ministers doing the same. Michael O'Riordan supported the disgusting stalinist regimes without criticism. O'Riordan is a stalinist. Yes he did fight in the Spanish Civil War, but that doesn't take from the fact that his politics were stalinist and undemocratic. A large factor in the failure of the Spanish revolution was the prominant role of Stalinists. O'Riordan probably sees Ahern as the "progressive bourgeoisie". disgusting!

Throughout the history of politics in Ireland, various parties, left and right have claimed the legacy of Connoly, streets buildings and party offices have been named after him, in the early 20s the Catholic Church even made an attempt to ascociate his name with their own teachings, despite the fact that connoly was a marxist atheist.. Connoly was an original marxist thinker and the first to really apply its methods to irish History, (see Labour in irish History). his work is still very relevent today for those wishing to understand Irish History. There is also a whole host of bios, written by people like kieran Allen and the late Desmond Greaves and apparently a film coming out as well. Hopefully this will open a new era of debate aboult connolys thoughts and legacy.
