Marking The Democratic Republic of Congo's independence day, over a hundred of Galway's Congolese and African community, along with a sprinkling of Galway activists, took to the streets today to protest against the wanton slaughter of 10 million DRC civilians this past decade, the refusal of the DRC's transitional government to hold elections and at the fact that life expectancy in their country remains at early to mid-forties. This love bomb of a protest, the singing, dancing, drumming, the pristine joie de vivre made us token "sprinklers" sheepish (all of us seasoned protest marchers), made us feel that we are only saturnine tyros when it comes to protesting - with such positive energy, perhaps, Ireland's Congolese/African community could do us all a favour by levitating the Pentagon 99 miles high before dumping it with maximum contempt into the Mindinao Trench?. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Outraged by yesterday's obscene jailing of the Rossport Five, Galway activists, their number greatly augmented by the Congolese and African community, picketed the dockland oil depot/offices of Shell Oil today. The fiery Padraig Cambell inspired us with his no bollocks address, winkled out a hard hat Shell honcho from his, well, shell, to deliver a note of protest and, to boot, led a contingent of activists to the nearby Constituency Clinic of Eamon O' Cuiv to remind him of his duty towards his Gaeltacht brothers and sisters. This coming Monday, at 10.30 AM, activists are urged to protest outside the Constituency Clinic (beside the Royal Rock Cafe, Ballybane Industrial Estate) of state minister, Frank Fahey. read full story / add a comment

(Indymedia.ie Jun 29th 2005) The High Court has jailed five people at the request of Shell for attempting to stop the multinational from laying a controversial, high-pressure, "offshore" gas pipeline through their land in Rossport, Co Mayo. The judge ordered that the five men - four small landowners and a local supporter - be imprisoned "until they purge their contempt", meaning they will not be released until they have promised to allow Shell to dig up their land. read full story / add a comment ![]()

It shall mark 115 days since the Queen of Engurland under the direction of very important man, (& don't you know it now? in the meantime) Tony "the antichrist" Blair celebrated the anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar on the 21st of June 2005, a mere more than week since he got the UK presidency of the European Union. read full story / add a comment

The two platforms have digger arms which are cutting a passageway for the Shell-Statoil pipeline in the bay just before the beach where it is to hit land. The two barges collect the removed material and dump it just off Erris head. A previous visit by the things to the Bay, last year, resulted in considerable pollution and fish kills. read full story / add a comment |
