RTE is this country’s national broadcasting agency for both television and radio. I doubt it very much if a columnist writing in a mainstream newspaper in Britain would feel the need to write, ‘The BBC is this country’s national broadcasting agency’. read full story / add a comment ![]()

1987 saw the French state arrest four members of the former libertarian communist armed group Action Directe who were then charged & sentenced to life imprisonment for a career of terrorist assassinations mostly targetted against business individuals during the period of '79 to '87. Last year Jean-Marc Rouillan was allowed "semi-liberty" probation status outside of prison. Then he gave an interview to the French "L'Express" newspaper exalting terrorism and armed struggle. read full story / add a comment

Over 20 students from UCD have occupied the office of Paul Gogarty Green Party TD for Dublin Mid-West and Spokesperson on Education in Lucan Village. This is in protest at the increase in college registration fees to €1500 per year and the possible full re-introduction of fees. The occupation is organised by the campaigning group, Free Education for Everyone (FEE), and is part of a national day of protest across the country against fees organised by FEE. Protests are also planned in Cork and Galway today. read full story / add a comment

![]() ![]() My book Bad Hare Days is generating a lot of controversy, not unexpected given the long running debate on the ethics of live hare coursing in Ireland. I can accept criticism, but not the bullying and the blind unreasoning hatred that my legitimate opposition to this so called sport has elicited from some coursing fans read full story / add a comment ![]()

The mystery of why some people choose to be blatently cruel instead of engaging in some positive activity remains somewhat unsolved. We do know however, that animal cruelty in childhood is often associated with other signs of poor control over aggressive impulses and with parental deprivation. More importantly we are also aware that cruelty to animals is often the precursor to cruelty to other humans. Those who delight in the suffering and destruction of gentle creatures will obviously not be gentle and kind towards their own species. Whether legal or illegal, cruelty is cruelty. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Ógra Shinn Féin will be mobilising this month (December) in solidarity with the remaining IRA POW’s, and international comrades imprisoned throughout the world. December is traditionally Prisoners’ month, and the Republican Youth Movement will be organising events to remember the POW’s, raising awareness of their current plight and calling for their freedom. While solidarity actions will be taking place through December, including a vigil at their National Congress, a weekend of action has been called for the 12 – 14 December, where events will take place across Ireland. read full story / add a comment ![]()

The official story is that the origins of the current crisis lie in the collapse of the US subprime mortgage market - i.e. poor people not paying their mortgages. Although this may have been the trigger event, it is not the real cause. The real cause lies in pyramids not houses. Specifically the enormous debt pyramid built up by the Western countries, particularly those following the Anglo-saxon economic model - which, unfortunately for us, includes Ireland. read full story / add a comment

Big Business doesn’t like what’s happening in South America. The election of reforming governments in Peru and Ecuador might have been a bearable irritant but that Chavez guy in Venezuela has really got up their noses. In Bolivia sections of the local ruling class got so riled up that they tried to overthrow President Morales in September. The US ruling class, in collusion with local bosses, is trying to destabilise political and economic reforms. As they see it, too much is going to workers and peasants, and not enough into their own coffers. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Pat Breen, Fine Gael TD from Bunratty, showed that he's been listening to the lies about natural resources, and he believes them, when he spoke about Corrib in the Dáil. The sad thing is that his acceptance of the nonsense peddled by Shell and the Green Party means that instead of an opposition testing and challenging the government we have a docile and pointless group of placemen waiting for a chance to get into government simply to get a few things for their constituents and jobs for their friends. read full story / add a comment
