General Prisons Board was established in Ireland in 1878. Following the foundation of the State, its functions were absorbed by the Department of Justice. The Board was abolished in 1928. In 1969 the Public Services Organisation Review Group recommended the establishment of executive agencies assigned to Ministers but operating under the general supervision of part time boards. read full story / add a comment

The anti-bin tax campaign in Stoneybatter took its first action today when it blockaded a bin truck just off the Oxmantown road. The truck was blockaded for one hour as a solidarity gesture with the campaign in Fingal. FINGAL COUNTY Council has served attachment and committal proceedings on Joe Higgins TD and Cllr Clare Daly for breaching High Court orders preventing them from obstructing waste collection. As Fingal council took a High Court case against bin tax protesters this morning bin tax campaigners in Cabra blockaded two trucks in solidarity with Fingal campaigners. Our intention is to hold onto at least one of these two trucks all day.
