Those interested in Roman Kathurlick affairs will this last week have noted how the pontiff and german shepherd, Joseph Ratzinger, Benedict XVI snubbed Berlusconi during the G8 bash in Italy but managed to give Obama a cuddle despite the former being anti-abortion, anti-contraception, anti-cell-stem research (& simply into good looking young girls) & the latter being a protestant. Then the Pope went off on holidays to get out of Rome which is a smelly and oppressive place during the summer months & broke his wrist, an incident reported throughout the global catholic interest press. But at the same time the official Vatican newspaper decided to "rehabilitate" Oscar Wilde. read full story / add a comment

[here's an interesting profile on Colm McCarthy from the Phoenix, and published here in the national interest] ECONOMIST Colm McCarthy has been selected as the man to make sensible, ie swingeing, cuts in public expenditure as chairman of the Special Group on Public Service Numbers and Expenditure (‘An Bord Snip Nua’). But as ministers agonise about the wisdom of even allowing the public to know what’s in McCarthy’s report, there is no debate about McCarthy’s credentials or judgment in these matters. read full story / add a comment

Here Joe Higgins, the Socialist Party MEP for Dublin, talks about the recent electricians´ strike, the disgusting attacks on it by the bosses and media, and how we can all learn from their suyccess of the electricians. You would think from reading some newspaper articles and editorials that workers go on strike to deliberately wreak havoc on whichever sector they work in, or on society in general. Take the 10,500 strong electricians strike last week. "Strike flies in the face of reason" pompously declared an editorial in a daily newspaper. An economic commentator went one better, calling the strike "insane and delusional". Former Minister of State and current Chief Executive of the Construction Industry Federation, Tom Parlon outshouted them all when he said that "we cannot let the lunatics be in charge." read full story / add a comment

"U2 now have their heads inserted so far up their anterior orifices it’s doubtful they’ll ever succeed in uncorking themselves. Does it not occur to them that the reason there might be a new resentment of the rich on this island is that we have just seen the mass of the people ripped off, homes lost, jobs destroyed, wages slashed, to save the sin-crinkled skin of the hoodlums who have run the economy into ruin? I suppose not" In his Counterpunch article Geldolf doesn't escape the withering contempt of scourge of hypocrisy Eamonn McCann ... read full story / add a comment

Founded in 1977, the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA) is the oldest political organization active in Afghanistan. Its' priority is the establishment of a democratic and secular regime, based on the self-determination of the Afghan people and the recognition of the rights of women [1]. RAWA conducts clandestine educational operations. The activists are constantly at risk and thus act under cover of humanitarian action. However, RAWA is 'not a humanitarian organization', and its social activism is driven by political goals. As part of a lecture tour in February, Alternative Libertaire had the opportunity to speak with one of its activists, Zoya. read full story / add a comment

Steve McGiffen is Assistant Professor of International Relations at the American Graduate School of International Relations and Diplomacy in Paris. He is editor of the radical left website Spectre [www.spectrezine.org] and, with Kartika Liotard, MEP, the author of Poisoned Spring: The EU and Water Privatisation (Pluto Press, 2009). Steve can be contacted at spmcgiffen [@] yahoo.co.uk The Lisbon Treaty is the latest step in a process which, though its conception can arguably be traced to the Treaty of Rome itself, was born at Maastricht. This process is one of removing what is truly of fundamental importance to capitalism – principally, the way in which it manages its economy – from the realm of an at least partially democratised politics. This is, moreover, not an exclusively European process, but one which is global. As parliamentary institutions have spread following the collapse of authoritarian systems of 'left' and right, they have simultaneously been deprived of a range of powers once considered proper to them. read full story / add a comment |
