International companies and foundations are pushing for a "Green Revolution" in Africa - promoting a model which is heavily dependent on fossil fuels and represents the kind of "same box thinking" which has left up to 1 billion people in the world hungry. It is time for us to recognise that the system some believed in so blindly through the Celtic Tiger years is in fact causing increasing poverty, hunger and desperation at its “other end”. Around the world, countries and peoples are looking at ways to fight back. read full story / add a comment ![]()

The SWP hasn't really engaged in Public debate on the subject of Left Unity but have decided to state our position in relation to recent statements by the Socialist Party. There are a lot of new people entering into struggle, and radical politics, for the first time and we feel it's appropriate now to make our views known. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Dublin activists today took part in a march organised by the Dublin Port Workers Group, which have been locked in a bitter dispute with their employer Peel Ports Group. The dockers have held out for over seven weeks, and were forced to strike after their employer imposed force redundancies and introduced new contracts with pay cuts and worse conditions. Despite the company employing scabs from Britain, and a security firm made up of ex-SAS operatives, the communities of Irishtown, East Wall and Ringsend have stood by the dockers in support. The company also took a high court injunction preventing effective picketing. Dock workers from across Europe have sent messages of solidarity and after pledges of similar action, Rotterdam was shut down in support of the action in Dublin today. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Last Thursday, 20th August to an eager audience in an overbrimming room of the Imperial Hotel, Eyre Square, Galway, with contributions from Jenny Graham, Susan Johnson and Derek Graham, husband of Jenny gave harrowing eyewitness accounts of the Israeli/US/EU created hell on earth that is called Gaza, in the case of Derek Graham, he told his story about being kidnapped at gunpoint in Mediterranean international waters along with 20 other Free Gaza Movement human rights activists, on board the Spirit of Humanity on a voyage of mercy,, forced into the Israeli port of Ashdod and then in tune with the Kafkaesque perversion and inversion of morality and reality that is the hallmark of Zionism, bizarrely questioned for violating Israeli territorial waters. read full story / add a comment ![]()

The dispute at MTL is escalating with hundreds of people taking part in demonstrations organised by the Port Workers Support Group. SIPTU members at the MTL depot in Dublin Port have been on strike since the beginning of July, resisting forced redundancies and pay cuts. The company shipped in scabs from the North and Britain on day one to steal the dockers’ jobs, and also got a High Court injunction preventing effective picketing. Below are updates coming in from this mornings actions, sent via Twitter by WSM members who are present. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Money matters in Tanzania. In Ireland the pursuit of money might, at least in recent years, be more about getting hold of the latest designer handbag, pair of Electric Picnic tickets or iPhone than affording rent or food, but this is certainly not the case in Tanzania. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Hundreds of thousands have found themselves made redundant due to the current economic crisis. This third part of my current series on Latin America will detail the current bases operated in Latin America and takes at least part of its title from a wonderful article published this afternoon by Fidel Castro on the subject of the new push by USA to open up more bases or what it terms "forward operating locations". Fidel writes a letter to Granma the official newspaper of the Cuban revolution named after the boat which left Mexico in 1956 carrying himself, his little brother Raul, the immortal Che and the much overlooked anarchist Camilo Cienfuegos to start a revolution. The rest is history, so they say. Courtously the editorial folk at Granma print Fidel's letter every week regardless of its quality but somehow this afternoon's started a "buzz" in Latin American solidarity and analyst circles worldwide for its wonderful byline & prediction : "US global domination and robots by 2020". Here follows a historical over-view, summary of Fidel's article & a guide to the current US bases in South America. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Dublin Ógra Shinn Féin protested today against the arrival of the British naval vessel the HMS Mersey (P283) in Dublin Port. The vessel, which is armed with a 20mm cannon and two machine guns arrived in Dublin yesterday morning and is due to leave on Thursday at 0600. Dublin Ógra Shinn Féin spokesperson Daithi Byrne said; ''This ship is representative of the same navy that is responsible for occupation and oppression across the globe. We are here today to tell the British Navy that there are not welcome in Ireland and to show our opposition to the display of British force. The open arm welcoming of this ship by the Government is insensitive and unacceptable.'' read full story / add a comment ![]()
