An excellent piece of investigative journalism from the German "Spiegel" magazine Martina Keller and Markus Grill has just been translated into English. It examines a US owned company which through its German subsidiary harvests human body parts (termed tissue) from dead Ukrainians. The illegal global trade in organ and tissue harvesting for so long associated in the public mind with the Chinese penal system and to a lesser extent the theft of organs from Indian peasants has not ended. Rather it has moved out of the gulags and slums into Wall Street trading on the cutting edge of medical treatment providers. The other side of Obama's health care, if you like. Inspired by the article (linked to in this text) I'd like to raise awareness about how the rich cheat the dead (if not death) & perhaps provoke thought amongst the agnostics, humanists, atheists amongst us about the moral value we place (if any) on dead bodies. read full story / add a comment

PANIC over Dog Breeding Regulations by those involved in Hunting and other blood sports.

Apparently the blood sports fraternity encompassing shooters, fox hunters, hare coursers and Greyhound breeders are terrified of having their establishments checked by officials of the Dept of the Environment when the dog Breeding regulations are incorporated into legislation shortly.~The Hunting Association of Ireland can be heard saying the Minister is going to ‘hang hunting’.
The AOHS would like to know what have these people got to hide. What have blood sports enthusiasts got hidden in their kennels? Why has panic been whipped up as a response to a simple bill that will make regulations to control Commercial Dog Breeding Establishments which are simply defined as any where that keeps five or more breeding female dogs. This will obviously include Hunt Kennels and others who breed dogs. Its simple!

Big business out to spend millions on Yes campaign

The pro-Lisbon political parties do not need to raise funds for the 'Yes' to Lisbon campaign. Big business is directly funding their side of the debate. The announcement that Intel and Ryanair will spend hundreds of thousands of euro to try to achieve a Yes vote in the upcoming Lisbon Treaty represents an unconcealed attempt by big business to shape politics in its favour.

Ryanair alone says it plans on spending over half a million Euro advertising for a pro-Lisbon vote, together with Intel that means up to a million Euro for a 'Yes' by only two private corporations.

NRA image of Neolithic fishing trap
national / history and heritage / news report Saturday August 29, 2009 12:23 by TaraWatch   image 5 images
The Irish Times reported on Friday, August 28 2009 that a 9,000 year old fishing trap was found in the Hill of Tara landscape at Clowanstown, near Dunsany, during excavations by the National Roads Authority (NRA), along the path of the M3 motorway. Settlement remains of agricultural, industrial and ritual nature were discovered amongst five man-made mounds, beside an ancient lake. Stone axes, jewellery and even a tiny wooden canoe were unearthed. The finds show once again that the Tara landscape masks an underground world of Irish pre-history, which should have been either left alone, or excavated as part of a proper research study, rather than as part of an archaeological salvage operation. read full story / add a comment

This Tuesday I rang Cape Cod Times journalist Karen Jefferies, who had done an article on my candidacy in the European elections with details regarding the investigations into the misapplication of 3000 of my first preference votes to Declan Ganley's quota. She told me that she had just returned from the Kennedy compound where Ted Kennedy looked to only have a couple of weeks left. It was with great sadness that I received the news the following day that indeed Ted Kennedy had passed away, so I decided to put together the details of my only dealings with the late Senator from Massachusetts.

A forum for workers is being organised next Wednesday in Limerick, to discuss how cuts in pay and jobs can be defeated. Starting at 8pm, in Pery's Hotel, the public meeting will be addressed by workers from Element Six, Mr Binman, recently on strike electricians and other workers involved in fighting to defend their jobs, pay and conditions.

The forum, hosted by the Socialist Party, hopes to provide an opportunity for people to come along and hear first hand what is happening to workers in Element Six, Mr. Binman and other companies, and how they intend to fight back, as well as bringing together workers from across the region, to discuss their struggles, learn from others.

Woop! It's that time of the month again, and we've got a new schedule for September which you can read about below. We've got some treats in store this month, our Independent Media block has been given over to the work of Joanne Richardson and we've a new mould breaking drama called The House. Richardson films look at the lives of Romanian women, globalisation and the difficulties facing political activists in a post-communist Eastern Europe. We've also significantly revised the content in our Gimme the Camera block, packing it with the work of more up and coming film makers. If there's anything we're most proud of this month, it's bringing the drama series The House to the air. There's a download of the schedule and an online version available.

The Anglo-American world order's media industrial complex has followed some key leaks to the "New York Times" in this August with shallow expressions of shock. It appears that Cheney authorised the CIA to outsource intelligence profiling with the purpose of arranging murder to a number of the usual suspect "private security consultancies". We've long known the name of one very prominent US company, Blackwater, and recently even in Ireland, we on the left, came to consider the activities of IRMS after on this site ample evidence was presented linking Michael Dwyer to both it and the same far-right Hungarian paramilitary group whose summer induction of new members was broken up last Saturday(*). But honestly, to understand our world today, be it the middle east, mid Asia or more to my point Latin America - it is essential we examine the "privatisation of war". read full story / add a comment

International companies and foundations are pushing for a "Green Revolution" in Africa - promoting a model which is heavily dependent on fossil fuels and represents the kind of "same box thinking" which has left up to 1 billion people in the world hungry.

It is time for us to recognise that the system some believed in so blindly through the Celtic Tiger years is in fact causing increasing poverty, hunger and desperation at its “other end”. Around the world, countries and peoples are looking at ways to fight back. read full story / add a comment
