Coca Cola, Green Isle Food and Marine Terminals strikers are to be among the contingents of workers at the Trade Union Federation (SIPTU & NEETU) protest outside Leinster House on Wednesday, September 16th at 1pm. The workers at Coca Cola HBC Ireland have been on strike for four weeks and have been sacked while out on strike. The Green Isle Food workers have been out for three weeks and the Marine Terminals workers have been on strike for ten weeks. In all these cases strike breakers have been brought in to do their work and court injunctions sought to minimise the effect of pickets. read full story / add a comment

The monthly peace vigil at Shannon on Sunday 13 Sept took place on a beautiful Indian Summer's day when nature seemed to be at peace with itself.
However, a closer look inside the airport fence showed very few civilian planes, with Aer Lingus cut backs on Shannon services, Air France/CityJet about to abandon its Shannon Paris route, and Ryanair also planning schedule cutbacks.
There was plenty of military activity however, with four warplanes surrounded by Gardai and Airport Police. read full story / add a comment

On Tuesday we are holding a lunchtime protest at the Deutsche Bank , in the IFSC . As supporters know , the bank owns a 49% stake in Peel Ports (the owners of MTL). Deutsche Bank is located immediately behind Connolly Station in the IFSC . We are aware that our previous protest here was not well received by tne bank so this is a timely return. They do not want the attention!

Speaking during a Sinn Féin canvass in Dublin city centre today Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams yesterday urged voters to reject the Lisbon Treaty '”in order to build a Fairer Ireland and a Better Europe”.

Membersof the party distributed leaflets in Dublin city centre asking people to reflect on why they were being asked to vote again. Responses varied, with most people saying they were going to vote the same way they did last year. However a worrying number of people were confused by the government's campaign on the treaty, and were unclear on the status of the so-called guarantees. read full story / add a comment

In what could have seemed like a typical storm in a tea-cup about a fortnight ago & in my opinion didn't merit comment or reporting then, a village consultation in Catalonia has evinced EU parliament cross party condemnation of the Spanish state. The leaders of the EU conservatives, socialists, greens and liberals have expressed their concern at the continued operation of the Spanish Falange party. Manfred Weber leads the conservative block in the EU parliament he has said "this demonstration celebrates a brutal and inhuman totalitarian system in which thousands of European died and it must be stopped" or Bernhard Rapkay leader of the German socialists in the EU "we must punish any European who uses fascist symbols".

What could have caused that?

The story really is extraordinarily interesting, ironic, though provoking & of interest to Welsh, Scot or any referendum voter. read full story / add a comment

One of the original protagonists of the Cuban revolution, Juan Almeida Bosque, has died of heart failure at the age of 82, according to state media.

Almeida was one of several vice-presidents in the Council of State under Raul Castro.

He was the only black commander in the Cuban leadership.

From a poor Havana neighbourhood, Almeida was in the group of guerrillas led by Fidel Castro which eventually seized power in Cuba in 1959. read full story / add a comment

Kicking off a visual demonstration outside Harold’s cross stadium and working our way with the help of local activists in Northern Ireland down through Cork city, campaigners and supporters of Animal Rights Action Network held peaceful protests and tabling events to highlight the cruel greyhound racing industry in Ireland. During a week of action from August 24 to 30 we worked hard to get the facts out to the general public about the cruelty and exploitation of greyhounds in the racing industry. Over the week and during the month of September ARAN will be working hard to raise awareness of the Irish campaign to abolish cruel greyhound racing and to educate people about the horrors of what gentle greyhounds endure before, during and after their racing lives. read full story / add a comment

An allegation that the offices of the Sporting Press in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, which describes itself as the “official organ of the Irish Coursing Club (ICC), has been raided within the past few days by the Garda Fraud Squad has been leaked by Coursing supporters. This allegation is contained on an Internet chat forum called the “Greyhound Knowledge Forum”.

In the course of an exchange of views and comments by forum members, mainly in relation to Minister John Gormley’s upcoming decision on whether to grant a hare-netting license to the ICC, a person calling himself “Vinny Grennan” refers specifically to the presence of the Fraud Squad in the Sporting Press offices in Clonmel.
