In the late 1970s and early 80s Dublin was a city spinning out of control due to the first devastating epidemic of heroin addiction. Inner city communities were under siege as drug users converged from all over to buy drugs in their flat complexes. By early 1983 hundreds had died as a result of drug related problems. Ordinary citizens mobilised and took to the streets in an attempt to stop the sale and distribution of drugs which were killing their families, friends and neighbours. read full story / add a comment

As conventional sources of oil become rarer the energy corporations have started the mass extraction of oil from the tar sands of Alberta. This is a filthy process that involves vast open cast mines, tailing ponds that can be seen from space and the use of huge quantities of water and energy making it a major cause of climate change. On Saturday Heather Milton Lightening of the Indigenous Environmental Network spoke to a national Shell to Sea meeting in Dublin about this struggle (last night she spoke in Inver, Erris). This is a 50 minute recording of that talk and the discussions that followed it. read full story / add a comment

Hollman Morris is a familiar name in Colombia, both for his TV programme Contravía (Counter-current), which he has been directing for many years and represents a unique window to glimpse into the realities of the Colombian conflict, and also for the accusations and harassment which he has suffered from the State intelligence agency (DAS) and by the very president Uribe. read full story / add a comment

Symbol of the resistance and intifada and leader of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades the formidable but affable and thoughtful Zakaria Zubeidi readily agreed to be interviewed on the 12th November at Jenin's Freedom Theatre. Not for him the hypocrisy of paying lip service to the PA Quisling regime in Ramallah but forthright condemnation and contempt: In June 2004, he kidnapped the corrupt Israeli collaborator, then PA governor of Jenin, Haidar Irshard to "beat the shit out of him." . He also burnt down the local office of the Palestinian Legislative Council. Alleged by the Israelis to be the chief strategist of suicide bombing he was ruthlessly hunted for extermination - in one botched attempt, in 2004, an Israeli death squad killed five other brigade members, including a 14-year old boy, in a jeep carrying him, in another, nine Palestinians were killed in Jenin including four civililians on a IOF murder expedition. read full story / add a comment

When it comes to the public meeting, Arthur Scargill is one of the best performers around. He has it down to fine art. Perhaps this is down to his political up bringing as a member of the Young Communist League, where great stress was placed on the importance of making inspiring speeches. Or perhaps it has something to do with that fact that much maligned figure like Scargill needs the medium of the public meeting more than most to get across his points, and has thus has a particualr understanding of how to use public meetings to maximum effect. read full story / add a comment

This year the Ahmadinejad regime gave even more importance to the anniversary of the U.S. embassy takeover than usual so as to claim anti-imperialist credentials. The imperialist media influential in Iran also emphasized this day as the anniversary of the takeover and ignored the memory of the student movement. So two opposing celebrations were held, one by the regime in front of the U.S. embassy and the other all over Tehran and other cities, especially those with universities. The regime’s TV used edited film footage from previous years to inflate the number of pro-government forces, but they did it so unskilfully that this became a scandal. This first-hand report translated from the Iranian student newspaper Bazr details some of the day's events. A June 2009 edition of BAZR in English is available at http://www.peykeiran.com/userfiles/file/bazr-EN.pdf read full story / add a comment |
