Iranian Secret Police have fired on the crowds protesting against the stealing of the Presidential election. Mir Hossein Mousavi, the "defeated" oresidential candidate had previously addressed the crowd. The demonstrators gathered in Tehran's Revolution Square, chanting pro-Mousavi slogans as riot police menaced them. "Mousavi we support you. We will die, but retrieve our votes," they shouted, many wearing the green of Mousavi's election campaign. And Mr Mousavi eventually appeared, addressing the crowd from the roof of his car. "The vote of the people is more important than Mousavi or any other person," he told his supporters. Before Mr Mousavi arrived, Reuters reported that his supporters had scuffled with stick-wielding men on motorcycles - apparently supporters of the president. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Western Australia's Attorney General is looking at whether the government can and should terminate a prison transport company's contract in the wake of a scathing coroner's report. The State Coroner Alastair Hope examined the death of an Aboriginal elder in the back of a prison van. Mr Ward was transported across Western Australia from the city of Laverton to Kalgoorlie, a mostly desert region know as Goldfields. Temperatures were recorded at 47º on the day. Although there was no airconditioning he was given 600ml of water to ease his suffering and ensure a comfortable 250 mile or 400 km journey. He died of heatstroke. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Working people continue to bear the brunt of the economic recession in terms on job cuts, poverty wages and house repossessions, while the rich and powerful in our society are bailed out again. This is state capitalism and comes under various forms from thatcherism to neo-liberalism. The speaker will present a brief overview of neo-liberalism and how it affects working people and the environment. Is neo-liberalism just naked capitalism under a different name? Does increased state involvement in the economy signal the end of neo-liberalism, or is it just a temporary measure? read full story / add a comment |
