With so much attention being focused on the cuts to social welfare and public sector pay the little matter of the taxpayer funding of political parties has been neglected. Hard as it is to believe the budget of all the Leinster House parties was untouched in Lenihans cutback free-for-all. The question must now be answered of all the parties - will you continue to take your full allocation of taxpayers money while the poor go hungry? read full story / add a comment

"Those regimes that break the rules must be held accountable. Sanctions must exact a real price. Intransigence must be met with increased pressure" : When Obama opined those sweet words during his acceptance speech of the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, they seemed to be crafted with Israel in mind, but not a whit, just another Orwellian baa from the wolf dressed in sheep's clothing, yet more Prozac to keep us standing idly by in a soothing semantic haze marvelling at the Imperor's new clothes and his committment for exacting a "real price" for Iran's pursuit of nuclear power for peaceful purposes - nuclear "obliteration" perhaps.? The Minister for the Environment Mr. John Gormley was today urged to immediately suspend the licence he granted earlier in the autumn to the Ward Union Stag Hunt following a serious incident last Friday when a deer being hunted by the Ward Union was chased onto the main road between Ashbourne and Slane. The deer, which was hit by an on-coming Mercedes, was seriously injured and had to be put down at the scene. It had been seen exiting Seamus Dardis’s farm having begun its chase from Huntsman Pat Coyles premises. read full story / add a comment

"As Bill Clinton and Madame Albright liked to say – the United Nations is there to further the best interests – of US foreign policy. However, to be fair, other States undoubtedly see it much the same way, but are more discrete and lack ambitions and military capacity for global empire! And now we have President Obama, who wants to work with the United Nations and be a player rather than to dominate and control. Sounds good. We await the reality as he expands the war in Afghanistan, keeps Bagram airbase prison full of the tortured and uncharged, finishes off the destruction of Iraq, refuses to end the occupation of Okinawa, has the thick skin to criticize China for human rights abuses when America itself has a deplorable record, and now militarily threatens Iran! Not exactly the sort of new player we had hoped for perhaps! But let’s keep our fingers crossed..." read full story / add a comment

3 days ago a group from the SOCIAL AND CLIMATE JUSTICE CARAVAN visited the Canadian embassy in Brussels to seek protection for a man from Colombia who has received death treaths from Colombian Paramilitaries. The Canadian state is responsible for this due to upcoming free trade agreements as well as, along with the US, not signing the charter to protect indigenous around the world.
