In 1966 the Fianna Fail Government were labeled the “Mink Coat Government” by Deputy Sweetman in a Dail debate. Today they can as easily be labeled the “Mink Farm Government”. Every other political party except Fianna Fail has called for a ban on fur factory farms. Without Fianna Fail’s support there would be no fur factory farms in Ireland. There would be no fur factories in Ireland if Fianna Fail carried out the law Protest Fianna Fail due to their support of fur factory farms. Organised by AFAR and ALiberation. Introduction Is the spectre of mass unemployment a permanent feature in post-boom Ireland? Ireland’s economic boom was predicated on a policy of low tax entry to the European free market as well as an unsustainable housing boom. The Irish state’s response to the global crisis seems to be deflationary policies in a ‘race to the bottom’ between peripheral and semi-peripheral economies. The weakness of indigenous Irish capitalism and the living costs in debt ridden Ireland do not leave much room for growth in private sector employment. The private sector has never been able to provide sustainable full employment in the history of the state. This article explores this thesis and maintains that workers should not depend on the private sector and its political servants to provide decent employment for all. read full story / add a comment

The WSM is calling for a No vote in the 2nd Lisbon referendum on the grounds that people in Ireland can do a lot better than a choice between the clowns in the Dáil or those in Brussels. We oppose the EU's policies of privatisation, militarisation and attacks on workers' conditions but don’t insult people’s intelligence by saying that our current society in Ireland with its severe recession, diabolical public services and corruption is anything better. The major lack of democracy in our lives is not between us and the EU but between the Irish government and us. read full story / add a comment

Coca-Cola likes to sponsor sport events to promote its brands. But with threatening to destroy 130 workplaces in distribution in Ireland, Coca-Cola Hellenic clearly has scored an own goal. Medical authorities in Colombia have confirmed that president Uribe is currently infected with AH1N1 (or the dreaded swine flu). Colombian state press officer César Mauricio Velásquez told press that on return from the emergency summit called in Argentina to discuss new US bases to Colombia, Uribe suffered an exceptionally high fever and all the usual symptoms at which point they did the tests (& one presumes brewed up some chicken broth and ordered in some tamiflu). The Colombian state medical officer Juan Gonzalo López confirmed to press that the president is receiving clinical care at the presidential palace rather than in hospital. On a trivial point this of course makes him the second head of state in the world to contract Swine Flu. The first was the president of Costa Rica, Oscar Arias who caught the virus during his attempts to broker a settlement between the legitimate and usurpist regimes of Honduras earlier this summer. read full story / add a comment

Dublin Ógra Shinn Féin's Saturday stall became the centre of a protest today against the latest attack by the Fianna Fail/Green Government against education. Over thirty activists gathered at the GPO to distribute leaflets explaining the cuts. According to Dublin spokesperson, Marcas Ó Mhaoldomhnaigh, many parents have been hit with bills costing hundreds of euro for books and school uniforms. "Many schools are set to lose special needs assistants and other vital resources. This government did not invest properly in the education system during the boom years and now we are seeing school children and their parents paying for their mistakes, it is completely unacceptable. Free primary education will truly be a thing of the past if we allow our schools to be further stripped of resources." read full story / add a comment

An excellent piece of investigative journalism from the German "Spiegel" magazine Martina Keller and Markus Grill has just been translated into English. It examines a US owned company which through its German subsidiary harvests human body parts (termed tissue) from dead Ukrainians. The illegal global trade in organ and tissue harvesting for so long associated in the public mind with the Chinese penal system and to a lesser extent the theft of organs from Indian peasants has not ended. Rather it has moved out of the gulags and slums into Wall Street trading on the cutting edge of medical treatment providers. The other side of Obama's health care, if you like. Inspired by the article (linked to in this text) I'd like to raise awareness about how the rich cheat the dead (if not death) & perhaps provoke thought amongst the agnostics, humanists, atheists amongst us about the moral value we place (if any) on dead bodies. read full story / add a comment

PANIC over Dog Breeding Regulations by those involved in Hunting and other blood sports. Apparently the blood sports fraternity encompassing shooters, fox hunters, hare coursers and Greyhound breeders are terrified of having their establishments checked by officials of the Dept of the Environment when the dog Breeding regulations are incorporated into legislation shortly.~The Hunting Association of Ireland can be heard saying the Minister is going to ‘hang hunting’. The AOHS would like to know what have these people got to hide. What have blood sports enthusiasts got hidden in their kennels? Why has panic been whipped up as a response to a simple bill that will make regulations to control Commercial Dog Breeding Establishments which are simply defined as any where that keeps five or more breeding female dogs. This will obviously include Hunt Kennels and others who breed dogs. Its simple! read full story / add a comment

The pro-Lisbon political parties do not need to raise funds for the 'Yes' to Lisbon campaign. Big business is directly funding their side of the debate. The announcement that Intel and Ryanair will spend hundreds of thousands of euro to try to achieve a Yes vote in the upcoming Lisbon Treaty represents an unconcealed attempt by big business to shape politics in its favour. Ryanair alone says it plans on spending over half a million Euro advertising for a pro-Lisbon vote, together with Intel that means up to a million Euro for a 'Yes' by only two private corporations. read full story / add a comment |
