Hands off People Of Iran sends solidarity greetings to protestors in Iran on 9th July. This day is the 10th anniversary of 18 Tir – when the Iranian state, under President Khatami violently put down a protest by students. The protest was initially against the suppression of a popular newspaper. Students were attacked in their university dormitories , as they were ransacked and set on fire by state forces. The reaction to the attack was overwhelming, with mass demonstrations taking place. The students became very radicalised and openly opposed the regime. Ayatollah Ali Khameneh’I ordered the movement to be crushed and President Khatami approved this decision. read full story / add a comment ![]()

During an intrastate conflict there are people who oppose war and are not always adequately represented in their own countries. If many such people join the Global Anti-war Party from both conflicting sides, the party will acquire sufficient moral strength to influence the conflict. We are inviting people from around the globe, who are interested in anti-war policies, to join in the discussion of this idea. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Electricians go on strike in response to a two year employer strike on pay. Since 2007 (roaring property boom) employers have been witholding pay that is legally due to electricians. They are now looking for a 10 per cent pay cut. Employers and unions came to an agreement, the employers broke the agreement, they now refuse to negotiate and are looking for a collective 10 per cent pay cut. read full story / add a comment ![]()

I arrived in occupied Erris on Friday evening having travelled down to take part in a national meeting of Shell to Sea groups. It had been a busy week for the campaign as the state had reacted to the ongoing resistance to Shell in Erris by seizing fishing boats, sending 7 people to jail without trial and banning two more from Co. Mayo. Not only had hundreds of state forces including the police, navy, air force and possibly the army been deployed to suppress protest in Erris but those of us doing solidarity work elsewhere had found from time to time that we were being followed by the secret police. read full story / add a comment ![]()

The sinking of fisherman Pat O Donnel’s boat and the arrival of Shell Oil’s pipe laying ship, The Solitaire, in Broadhaven Bay, Mayo, has brought the Corrib Gas field very much back into the news. Some media are once again highlighting the high costs of the Garda operation to protect the Shell operation. Occasional articles appear denigrating those who are opposing the Shell operation in its current form. There are frequent dark hints about ‘subversive’ forces driving the opposition. It was always thus when mere peasants or proletarians dared to oppose the powerful vested interests of the economic and political establishment . One hundred years ago when Big Jim Larkin arrived from Liverpool to organise the downtrodden manual labourers of Belfast and Dublin, his message of hope to them was demonised as a subversive plot to destroy society. read full story / add a comment ![]()
