There are currently around 100 student activists occupying the grounds of the Department of Education, on Marlborough St., Dublin. At the time of writing there is an open space discussion happening on the subject of "alternative education". Gardai have locked the gate and are not allowing additional participants to enter. However the atmosphere inside is peaceful and constructive. Come down to Marlborough St. (off Talbot St.) to show your solidarity with the activists inside! The Surprise Conference 2010, is an event organized by a group of autonomous individuals with the view to starting a more open minded conversation about the future of Irish education that the one that is currently taking place. We feel that the current education system is expensive and inefficient and rather than simply making financial cuts we should make long term structural changes. read full story / add a comment

SIPTU Organiser Teri Cregan has reacted angrily to the Secretary of State Owen Paterson's recent assertion that there would be 'no negotiation' on the £4bn of cuts facing the north. He made the remarks while giving a speech at a Co-operation Ireland dinner in Belfast on Thursday evening, stating. "A settlement is precisely that - a settlement. It is not the opening round of a negotiation... Northern Ireland is now the only part of the United Kingdom that hasn't set a budget following the spending review settlement. That cannot go on." Ms Cregan branded the statement as "Tory arrogance in the extreme." read full story / add a comment

Today in Dublin, in a massive demonstration not witnessed in Ireland since 2003 when over 100,000 marched in protest against the then impending criminal attack on Iraq by the US, a similar number marched in protest against their ongoing immiseration by a criminal Irish government, hell bent on forcing on them and the most vulnerable in Irish society the gambling debts of their cronies in the financial and property developer sector of the Irish economy. read full story / add a comment

There was a huge turnout on the march today to protest against the IMF/EU Cuts FF Government despite the freezing weather. A huge mass of people had assembled at Wood Quay for 12 noon and it was a sea of flags, banner and placards and it took at least half an hour possibly more for the full procession of people to pass. Many were blowing whistles and a few banging pots and pans in recognition of the IMF Argentina crisis back in 2001. The march stretched all the way back along the North side of the quays to O'Donovan Rossa bridge connecting Winetavern St beside Wood Quay to Ormonde Quay. read full story / add a comment

Last night at a Special General Meeting, members of the Dublin Food Co-Op voted overwhelmingly to boycott Israeli goods. This was the third attempt over the last 2 years to bring in a boycott of Israeli goods. Previous attempts failed to reach consensus or when put to a vote failed to reach the required 75%. Last night the mood was clearly in favour with a final tally of 50 for to about 6 against. read full story / add a comment

Around the world countries have been betrayed by their politicians who have worked hand in glove with their capitalist partners to systematically destory each economy and then to hand them over to a private financial elite composed of bankers, investors and speculators and other parasites.
From Iceland to Lativa to Greece to Ireland the Financial Coup has taken place. It has already long ago taken place in such countries as the USA where big capital and big finance captured their governments long ago where corporations like Goldman Sachs have their own people in government dictating the bailouts. But many other countries are on the list. The austerity which the capitalists smile down on, have already hit most of Europe especially in countries like Spain, Portugal, Hungary and the UK. read full story / add a comment

Ask Belgium", By SIMON JOHNSON: http://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/11/25/will-irela...gium/ Extract: "But look at loans outstanding relative to the size of their domestic economies (using the data from the Bank for International Settlements on what it calls “ultimate risk basis”). German banks are owed $139 billion, which is 4.2 percent of German G.D.P. British banks are owed $131 billion, or about 5 percent of Great Britain’s G.D.P. French banks are owed $43.5 billion, which is approaching 2 percent of French G.D.P." read full story / add a comment
